About the role
This position provides support in a research setting, assisting with various molecular and cellular biology experiments, animal studies, and data analysis.Responsibilities
- Assist with experiments, making observations, and recording data.
- Use molecular biological techniques to develop plasmid and viral-based gene transfer vectors.
- Assist with animal studies, including breeding, injections, and maintaining transgenic mouse colonies.
- Perform in vivo imaging, necropsy, tissue trimming, and histology.
- Prepare tissue cultures and propagate tumor cell lines.
- Extract RNA, reverse transcribe cDNA, perform RT-PCR, and analyze plasmids by gel electrophoresis.
- Conduct basic cellular immunology tests such as FACS and CFSE proliferation assays, and perform cell counting.
- Prepare media and buffers as needed.
- Maintain lab records and order supplies as necessary.
Requirements
- Theoretical knowledge of biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, and genetics, including relevant laboratory techniques, obtained through a Bachelor’s degree in biology or related field.
- Experience with tissue culture, including freezing, thawing, counting cells, and splitting cultures.
- Experience with data analysis using Excel and Prism software.
- Experience with aseptic techniques and tissue culture.
- Ability to work with human tissues, including tissue trimming, histology, and necropsy.
- Knowledge of cell culture, media preparation, and DNA electrophoresis.
- Willingness to follow step-by-step experimental protocols.
- Ability to use basic laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, spectrophotometers, balances, pH meters, and electrophoresis equipment.
- Willingness to handle chemical and biohazard materials safely.
- Willingness to adhere to UCSD safety guidelines.
- Familiarity with computer software for data analysis and storage.
- Willingness to maintain confidentiality and organize lab equipment and supplies.
- Ability to perform basic PCR and ELISA techniques.
- Ability to work with a variety of chemicals and biological materials while adhering to safety procedures.
- Willingness to work various hours and locations as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with patient databases and EPIC.
- Experience with small lab animals (mice), including administering medications, anesthesia, and performing phlebotomy and minor surgical procedures.
- Knowledge of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cell biology, microbiology, molecular biology, and prostate cancer biology.
- Understanding of prostate cancer disease models and clinical features.
