Research Assistant 1

Position Objective

Working under moderate supervision, the Research Assistant 1 will perform experiments in a neuroscience lab researching serotonin biochemical dynamics during sleep; including chromatography–mass spectrometry, pharmacology, cell culture work, immunohistochemistry and general lab maintenance.

Essential Functions

• Perform research work in medical and related technical areas involves use of lab / research skills using standard techniques of confocal microscope imaging, chromatography–mass spectrometry, pharmacology, and cell culture. This includes conducting analysis of samples, analytical chemistry, pharmacological analysis, protein analysis, and cloning/sub-cloning. (50%)
• Generate, maintain, and analyze tissue culture cell lines. Establish and maintain mammalian tissue culture cell lines under sterile conditions. Perform routine cell culture procedures, including thawing, passaging, expansion, cryopreservation, and quality control. Monitor cell health, viability, and contamination status. (10%)
• Record results for a particular experiment or closely related series of experiments. Collect, record, and organize raw data and update laboratory data folders. (10%)
• Maintain records of experiments. Keep clear and organized records of experiments in notebooks, document procedures used, and cell growth data generated. (10%)
• Configure and operate basic laboratory instruments, and ensure instruments are maintained which includes but is not limited to centrifuge, cell culture hood, cell counter, etc. (10%)
• Order laboratory supplies. Maintain stock reagents, supplies, and inventory used in the lab for microscopy. (10%)

Qualifications

Education/Experience: Bachelor's degree in science and 0 to 1 year of experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience required.

Required Skills

• Knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the basic sciences.
• Ability to rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.
• Ability to operate laboratory equipment including microscopes, centrifuge, cell culture hood, cell counter, incubators, and fume hood.
• Ability to meet consistent attendance.
• Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face to face.

• Basic knowledge of Microsoft office.

Working Conditions

General laboratory environment. The lab is an open floor plan with abundant bench space and ample desk space with computers. The lab is equipped with one shared fume hood for storage of hazardous and non-hazardous materials (fluorophores, solvents, reagents, Acetone, Ethanol, Trypsin, L-glutamine, etc.). Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including lab coat, gloves and googles, may be required and provided to limit exposure to hazards. The cell culture room nearby is equipped with incubators, culture hood, and microscope. The employee should expect frequent interactions with lab members and must be willing to collaborate.

Pay

The starting wage rate is $17.65 per hour, depending on qualifications, experience, department budgets, and industry data.
