About the Role
Assist chemists and senior laboratory staff in performing necessary lab functions for research and development and conduct quality control activities in accordance with established practices, processes, regulations, guidelines, and standards in a safe and efficient manner under general or minimal supervision. Daily tasks vary depending on assigned projects.
Responsibilities
- Prepares and Tests Lab Scale Polyurethane Systems
- Build batches from 50g to 150 lbs according to given formulations accurately and efficiently.
- Conduct testing on production batches, raw materials, and R&D formulations, including but not limited to water titration, viscosity, specific gravity, density, age studies, hand mix and spray testing, thermal conductivity, compressive strength, open cell content, and dimensional stability.
- Take observational notes and communicate findings.
- Complete small R&D projects with training and demonstrated aptitude.
- Operate and use spray equipment with training.
- Data Management and Communication
- Record and report results in lab books, data sheets, Microsoft programs, email, and other data systems.
- Write technical reports or prepare graphs/charts to document experimental results.
- Track, chart, analyze, and report QC data monthly, quarterly, yearly, and as needed.
- Perform various math equations by hand and/or in Excel.
- Spray Applications Maintenance
- Prepare, maintain, and clean spray applications rooms and equipment for testing.
- Set up and shut down spray reactors as needed.
- Disassemble, clean, and reassemble spray guns to maintain working order.
- Construct and disassemble wall and test frameworks/substrates using power tools and saws.
- Store and organize samples; dispose of foam and waste after each spray.
- Maintain a clean and safe spray applications environment.
- Releases and Holds Batches
- Read and interpret Certificates of Analysis and other documentation.
- Release batches that meet all specifications and criteria.
- Follow troubleshooting procedures for batches that do not meet specifications.
- Calibration of Equipment
- Set up equipment calibration schedules.
- Conduct calibrations or schedule appointments with professionals.
- Maintain organized calibration records for inspectors.
- Maintain Laboratory and Workplace Cleanliness and Supplies
- Perform weekly cleaning of surfaces and equipment.
- Tidy and organize the laboratory weekly.
- Take out garbage and clean personal workspace daily.
- Maintain weekly inventory of chemicals and building supplies; communicate needs.
- Replenish chemicals, laboratory supplies, and building materials weekly.
- Additional Responsibilities
- Conduct or assist in Root Cause analysis of production or field issues.
- Provide and maintain a safe work environment by participating in safety programs and conducting audits.
- Provide technical support to chemists, sales, tech service, and customers as needed.
Requirements
- Education/Experience
- Minimum high school diploma or GED + <2 years vocational/technical program, or equivalent; Associate’s degree in Science preferred.
- Minimum three months of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Experience in spraying chemicals and mixing chemicals according to formulations is preferred.
- Wet lab experience with chemistry background is a priority.
- Language Ability
- Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Write routine reports and correspondence.
- Speak effectively before groups of customers or employees.
- Math Ability
- Calculate figures such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume.
- Apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
- Reasoning Ability
- Solve practical problems with limited standardization.
- Interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Computer Skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, including data entry in Excel, writing lab reports in Word, and PowerPoint.
