About the role
The Bureau of Mental Health (BMH) is part of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. BMH aims to improve mental health and reduce disparities by providing services and conducting research.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the planning, development, and implementation of population-level mental health surveillance and research.
- Design, conduct, and interpret analysis of administrative and survey data related to mental health outcomes and service utilization.
- Investigate surveillance clusters or signals and implement new data sources and methodologies.
- Ensure surveillance indicators are measurable, standardized, and disaggregated by demographics to identify disparities.
- Leverage surveillance data to support the planning and allocation of mental health programs.
- Maintain data quality by monitoring systems for anomalies, outliers, and applying corrective actions.
- Preprocess, clean, and manage data using SAS and R; assist in data management efforts.
- Create visualizations, reports, and dashboards to present data findings to stakeholders.
- Incorporate an equity lens throughout all work.
Requirements
Preferred qualifications include:
- Strong analytic and statistical skills with proficiency in SAS and R.
- Experience designing and producing dashboards, reports, and maps using Tableau, Microsoft Power BI, and GIS tools.
- Competency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Qualifications
- A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in physical, biological, environmental, or social science.
- One year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative, or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization, or three years of full-time research experience.
- Equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for the required experience.
- Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in Levels I and II.
