About the Role

As a member of the Renown Health Security team, this incumbent ensures the security, safety, and well-being of all Renown Health property and individuals. The role includes performing armed postings and Rescue Team duties as defined by Renown Health Policy. The position emphasizes leadership competencies such as ownership, innovation, collaboration, adaptability, integrity, and trust.

Reporting to an on-duty Security Supervisor or Senior Security Officer, the Rescue Officer is responsible for maintaining a secure environment for employees, patients, and visitors, optimizing the patient healthcare experience through high-quality service.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure a secure environment for patients, staff, and visitors at all Renown Health properties, aligned with Renown Health’s values and goals.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, restraint, quality decision-making, and understanding that being armed is a tool to support other aspects of the role.
  • Act as a Violence Prevention Champion, assisting in teaching employees active shooter protocol, stop-the-bleed processes, and workplace violence prevention.
  • Respond to Rescue Team events, armed calls, and armed postings as defined by Renown Health Policy, ensuring accurate reporting and record-keeping.
  • Maintain Security Officer skills, facility knowledge, and guest relations through rotation into all Security Officer duties.
  • Uphold patient confidentiality and report instances requiring statutory reporting to state and federal agencies.
  • Promote crime prevention and use proactive techniques to reduce crime, theft, and loss of Renown Health property.
  • Administer patient restraints when authorized by an approved medical practitioner.
  • Detain individuals subject to arrest who pose an immediate threat.
  • Appear in court as required and maintain up-to-date knowledge of Nevada criminal statutes and procedures.
  • Interact with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, including Reno Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff’s Department, and others.
  • Train with local law enforcement to meet NFPA 3000 requirements, The Joint Commission Active Shooter standards, and regional active shooter protocols.
  • Exercise restraint in entering patient events involving non-armed personnel, except as allowed by Renown Health Policy.
  • Complete annual testing on Renown Health Rescue Team, Use-of-Force, and Shooting Policy.
  • Work all shifts, including responding to emergencies and mandatory overtime to ensure minimum staffing levels.
  • Complete required departmental training within 90 days, including handcuffing certification, OC Spray Certification, and non-violent de-escalation and intervention certification.
  • Attend advanced training for career advancement, such as Field Training Officer, Bicycle Officer, Rescue Officer training, and Taser End User Certification.
  • Perform cross-training as a security dispatcher.

Requirements

  • Working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking.
  • High school diploma preferred; college degree in Criminal Justice or a related field is a plus.
  • Understanding of military, police, and/or security principles; 1-year experience in law enforcement, security, or military preferred.
  • Healthcare security experience is preferred.
  • High level of motivation, creativity in problem-solving, and strong customer service and team-building skills.
  • Valid State of Nevada or California driver’s license and ability to pass Renown Health’s Department of Motor Vehicle Report criteria.
  • State of Nevada Concealed Weapons Permit (CCW) obtained within 90 days of hire or a valid CCW under H.R.218 - Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act of 2004.
  • Valid State of Nevada Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certificate (Handgun Only) required within 12 months of hire.
  • AHA Heart Saver certification required within 12 months of hire.
  • Department-approved handcuffing certification, OC spray certification, and de-escalation training certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • Completion of background check upon hire and passing of annual background check to remain in the position.
  • Computer skills necessary to complete online learning, access forms and policies, and complete online benefits enrollment within 90 days.
  • Strong written, verbal, and computer skills are desirable.
  • IAHSS Advanced Security Officer certification is preferred.
