About the role
Reports directly to the designated immediate manager for the specific practice or outpatient department. Serves as a liaison between patients, nurses, physicians, and others, providing excellent customer service and greeting patients entering the department or practice.
Responsibilities
- Schedule patient appointments.
- Interview patients to obtain appropriate demographic and financial information.
- Register patients and perform other registration functions.
- Obtain necessary signatures and documentation from patients for billing and insurance purposes.
- Order laboratory tests and other tests via the computer system at the direction of physicians.
- Perform end-of-day disposition and gather appropriate statistical information relating to patients.
- Announce the arrival of patients and answer incoming telephone calls for the department or practice.
- Process referral requests for all providers practicing within the clinic module.
- Ensure referral or authorization numbers are obtained for services when needed.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of two (2) years experience in a clinical office setting with extensive patient registration, front desk, and insurance experience and knowledge.
- Knowledge of insurance plans and guidelines.
- Ability to obtain authorizations and pre-certifications from insurance plans.
- Excellent decision-making skills and initiative.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and prioritization abilities.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
- Basic arithmetic skills for cashiering.
- Data entry experience.
- Ability to handle stressful situations professionally in a customer service capacity.
- Skilled in conflict resolution.
Preferred Qualifications
- Two to four (2-4) years of clerical or customer service experience, ideally in a healthcare-related industry.
- One year of experience with third-party payors and computer systems for inputting data and reviewing patient demographic material.
- ICD-9 and CPT coding knowledge.
- Completion of a standard terminology course.
