About the role
Texas Security General is seeking a Renewal Underwriter to join their growing team in San Antonio, TX. The ideal candidate will review renewal insurance applications and assist with new business applications, evaluating, classifying, and rating individuals and groups for insurance.
Responsibilities
- Examines documents such as application forms, inspection reports, insurance maps, and medical reports to determine the degree of risk based on factors like the applicant's financial standing, age, occupation, accident history, and the value and condition of the property.
- Reviews company records to determine the amount of insurance in force on a single risk or a group of closely related risks and evaluates the possibility of losses due to catastrophe or excessive insurance.
- Underwrites or brokers renewal accounts, ensuring all required information is obtained according to carrier guidelines. Completes proper applications, confirms quotes and binders in writing, issues policies promptly and accurately, makes state filings (where applicable), and ensures taxes are paid in accordance with appropriate state laws.
- Sets up payments on risks bound or written. Assists the Underwriter/Broker with the review, analysis, and underwriting of primarily renewal risks, as well as new business as directed.
- Rates accounts for premiums and terms, analyzes exposures for quotes for new and renewal business, and issues written indications, quotes, and binders.
- Uses inspection companies to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain company underwriting policies.
- Works with the Underwriter/Broker to market and meet with retail agency customers to develop business and cultivate relationships in an effort to grow the book of business.
- Secures and negotiates placements for risks, utilizing binding authorities or brokering when necessary to successfully negotiate placements.
- Aids the department with overall underwriting results. Ensures that coding on specific required forms is completed and utilized.
- Serves and perpetuates existing business, maintaining a keen awareness of priorities. Instructs and trains processors and assistants, reviewing indications, quotes, binders, submissions, and policies for completeness and accuracy.
- Provides guidance and training to others in the department to help reduce the underwriter’s clerical workload.
- Fosters and improves relationships with other departments, producers, companies, and competitors.
- Provides full assistance and support for the sales and production process in the department.
- Confers with the Department Leader before underwriting or brokering unusual or unfamiliar coverages or manuscript forms.
Requirements
P&I State licensed. Pursues the CIC or CPCU designation, thorough familiarity with applicable ISO manuals, forms, rating plans, policy forms i.e. coverages, exclusions, conditions and terms (preferred).
- Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university is desired or five years insurance experience, two years of which are as an underwriting assistant.
- Proficient with MS Office.
- Exceptional telephone demeanor.
- One to three years’ experience with excess and surplus lines underwriting agency or company.
