Temporary position assisting a graduate student with field data collection and data entry for a migratory songbird research project. Fieldwork includes mist-netting, bird handling, vegetation sampling, and deployment of autonomous recording units (ARUs) in early-succession forests. The project collaborates with the Cornell Lab eBird Program and the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI) to study songbird stopover sites in regenerating timber harvests.
Responsibilities
- Drive several hours daily to field sites and hike long distances off-trail in mountainous terrain while carrying equipment (up to 40 lbs).
- Identify avian species by sight and sound, with emphasis on song and call identification.
- Set up and deploy autonomous recording units (ARUs) and mist-nets.
- Assist in banding, handling, and extracting live birds from nets.
- Perform vegetation surveys, including tree identification and structural habitat measurements (e.g., DBH, canopy cover).
- Interact with private landowners and the public as needed.
- Work in remote, rugged field sites with limited cell reception (modern field housing provided).
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Ability to work full-time in Appalachian spring/summer conditions.
- Ability to hike several miles off-trail while carrying up to 40 lbs. of gear.
- 0-6 months experience identifying eastern songbirds by sight and sound (preference for song/call identification).
- High preference for applicants with mist-netting experience or ability to reliably identify common regional species by song.
- Experience with structural habitat measurements (e.g., DBH, canopy cover, tree ID) preferred but training will be provided.
- Associate’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Pay Grade: 10
Schedule
- Length of Assignment: 2 months
- Work Hours: 37.5 hours per week
- Full-time, non-exempt position
