About the Role

This Remote Lead Janitor position directs the activities of staff involved in laundry, cleaning services, and related duties to maintain remote industrial housing facilities, food service areas, office facilities, or similar areas in a clean and orderly condition. The role also involves expediting products, supplies, and equipment between camps.

All duties are performed in accordance with NMS’ mission, vision, and values, as well as housekeeping policies, practices, and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all duties required of a janitor or other assigned employee.
  • Meet all obligations required of assigned employees.
  • Promote NMS Core Values in the workplace.
  • Direct and guide assigned housekeeping and janitorial employees.
  • Train new staff and provide ongoing training to existing staff.
  • Conduct, replace, and disperse assigned inventories regularly.
  • Perform inspections to maintain the quality of provided services.
  • Coordinate care and maintenance of associated equipment.
  • Conduct safety meetings and ensure daily operations comply with company and client safety requirements.
  • Ensure all quality standards and work procedures for staff are met.
  • Personally resolve minor maintenance or client emergencies as they occur or take steps to address them permanently.
  • Assist employees in resolving work-related difficulties.
  • Identify, resolve, or appropriately report site safety hazards.
  • Ensure all required HazCom documentation is available.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • At least one (1) year of experience with commercial cleaning equipment and industrial cleaning processes.
  • At least one (1) year of experience in commercial housekeeping.
  • At least one (1) year of supervisory experience in a directly related field.
  • A valid driver’s license and an acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under NMS’ vehicle insurance policy.
  • Must pass all pre-employment contract requirements, which may include: drug test, physical and fit-for-duty assessment, and hearing test. Applicants not located near a testing facility are responsible for travel expenses to the nearest testing facility.
  • Ability to cooperate and work as part of a team with fellow employees, customers, and clients.
  • Ability to make decisions with little to no supervision.
  • Ability to stand for 12 hours per shift for the scheduled rotation.
  • Ability to live in dormitory-style settings and meet cleanliness requirements of the remote camp.
  • Must speak, understand, read, and write English as required by the contract.
  • Must meet and adhere to all safety guidelines and regulations set forth by the company and client.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Environment: Remote camp setting with frequent exposure to arctic conditions. Moderate to loud noise levels.

Physical Demands: Constant standing, sitting, walking, climbing, pushing, pulling, use of hands and arms, stooping, kneeling, and crouching. Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, or toxic/caustic chemicals.

Travel: Must be able to travel by plane and/or bus to remote camps.

Fit-for-Duty Test Requirements:

  • Lift 50 lbs. from floor to knuckle x2.
  • Lift 50 lbs. from floor to waist x2.
  • Lift 38 lbs. from floor to shoulders x2.
  • Carry 38 lbs. with two hands for a minimum distance of 30 feet x2 (60-second rest between tests).
  • Push horizontally with a peak force of 50 ft-lbs. with two hands.
  • Pull horizontally with a peak force of 75 ft-lbs. with two hands.
  • Perform alternate cross-over toe touches x5 each side (continuous, self-paced).
  • Functionally squat x5 (continuous, self-paced).
  • Climb up and down 12 steps x15 for a total of 180 steps (30-second rest after each set of 50 steps, self-paced).
  • Climb up and down 10 steps x5 while carrying 38 lbs. in one hand (60-second rest after 25 steps, self-paced).
  • Climb a slanted ladder with 3 rungs x3 repetitions (continuous, self-paced).

Notes for Candidates Residing Outside Anchorage

For pre-employment testing, Anchorage, AK, is considered the point of hire (except for drug testing, which will be conducted near the candidate’s place of residence). Employees are responsible for travel expenses and accommodations related to pre-employment tasks in Anchorage, including safety training and required testing (e.g., physical, DOT physical/medical card, fit-for-duty, audiogram, or other contract/company requirements).

For Alyeska Contract candidates residing in Alaska, pre-employment testing will be scheduled near the candidate’s area of residence unless the region lacks necessary service providers. All employees are responsible for expenses related to reporting to Anchorage for scheduled trips to remote locations.
