Remediation Project Manager

About the role
This Environmental Specialist position in the Federal Facilities Unit oversees and facilitates the cleanup of contaminated sites associated with federal government activities, including active military installations and Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) across Kansas. The role acts as a project manager, reviewing technical reports, authoring decision documents, conducting field oversight, and ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and best practices.
Responsibilities
- Serve as KDHE project manager for environmentally contaminated sites or other assigned projects within the Federal Facilities Program, including Federal Facilities and Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS).
- Review and evaluate technical work plans, proposals, and reports for completeness, accuracy, and technical adequacy, including analysis and interpretation of environmental data to develop solutions.
- Evaluate investigative, monitoring, and remedial progress to ensure projects are completed within time frames established by KDHE, state or federal law, or agreements with the Department of Defense.
- Interact with consultants and the public to review, present, and negotiate all aspects of project management.
- Coordinate project management with other bureaus, programs, and governmental or regulatory entities.
- Communicate project-specific management details with the Unit Manager, Section Chief, and Bureau Director as appropriate.
- Review and/or evaluate groundwater, soil, sediment, and/or surface water quality sampling programs to ensure compliance with approved Quality Assurance Project Plans (QAPP) and applicable guidance.
- Perform site visits for oversight of inspections, field investigations, and remediation activities.
- Collect split samples for verification of cleanup standards and provide oversight of field activities such as drilling, sampling, trenching, and building demolition.
- May be temporarily assigned to assist other programs or projects as needed.
Requirements
- Four years of experience in environmental science with an emphasis on geology, chemistry, biology, or a related natural science field.
- Valid driver’s license (required to operate state, private, or rental vehicles for state business).
- Annual physical certification to work in required personal protective equipment.
- Must pass a physical assessment of job-related essential functions.
- Valid Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate (required for all state employees; must be obtained within ten days of job offer).
Preferred Qualifications
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
- Strong proofreading, editing, and attention to detail.
- Six years of experience in geology, hydrogeology, or environmental/earth/natural science.
- Experience with ArcGIS mapping, project and data management, and sampling/logging.
- Experience with Superfund (CERCLA) and/or RCRA Programs.
- Ability to use personal protective equipment.

Pay
Pay rate: $25.94–$28.59 per hour, depending on education, experience, or qualifications.
Schedule
Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM (flexible schedules available). Full-time, regular position.
