About the role
The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) seeks to advance the health of patients and communities through the provision of extraordinary care. Incumbents in these positions are physicians assigned to a County Physician Registry and licensed to render professional medical services in various specialties.
Responsibilities
- Performs medical work in ambulatory and in-patient environments, including primary, specialty, and surgical fields.
- Prescribes drugs and/or therapy, monitors patients' progress, records observations and changes, and adjusts treatments as required.
- Consults with staff physicians and paramedical personnel regarding care of patients and/or medical and diagnostic work performed.
- Provides consultation to other medical services, including specialists in other fields.
- Maintains varied hours on a rotated schedule with other physicians to ensure availability of a physician.
- Convenes with medical and professional personnel in fields such as toxicology to determine the main and contributing causes of death.
- Conducts more difficult post-mortem examinations, certifies the cause of death, and testifies in court as an expert witness.
Requirements
- Completion of a residency program approved by an American Specialty Board in one or more designated specialties* or equivalent training**.
- License: California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.
- Physical Class III: Moderate, including standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; occasional lifting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
Special Requirements
- Equivalent training for Emergency Medicine: Approval by the Director of Health Services.
- Completion of residency program within 12 months of filing.
- California State Physician and Surgeon's Certificate authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California.
Qualifications
Applicants must complete a self-assessment based on a Supplemental Questionnaire covering experience, professional development, and collaboration. A passing score of 70% or higher is required.
