About the role

We are seeking a Reliability Test Engineer to join a team focused on developing next-generation optical interconnect systems. In this role, you will plan and execute environmental and reliability tests on optical systems, components, and subsystems to ensure hardware meets qualification and lifetime requirements. You will collaborate with design, reliability, manufacturing, and quality teams to analyze results, investigate failures, and drive design improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and own reliability test plans, including life tests and accelerated stress tests, for optical, opto-mechanical, and electrical assemblies.
  • Perform statistical reliability analysis, such as Weibull, acceleration modeling, and degradation analysis, to develop reliability models.
  • Cook up and execute environmental and reliability tests, including thermal cycling, HALT/HASS, and vibration testing.
  • Investigate failures across optical, mechanical, and electrical domains to determine failure modes, mechanisms, and root causes.
  • Lead Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) and Root Cause Analysis (RCA) activities.
  • Implement Design for Reliability (DfR) by providing test data and risk assessments to design engineering.
  • Document test procedures, results, and failure analysis reports with clear conclusions.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing and quality teams to define and refine reliability screening and acceptance criteria.
  • Communicate findings and recommendations to engineering and cross-functional teams.

Requirements

  • Educational background: A bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, materials science, physics, or a related field is required.
  • Experience: At least one year of experience with analytical methodologies associated with materials and failure analysis, and at least one year of experience conducting statistical reliability data analysis. Experience collaborating with manufacturing, quality, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and test teams is also required.

Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary for this role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with PCBA-level testing, inspection, and failure analysis.
  • Proficiency with reliability analysis methods and tools such as Weibull analysis, Weibull++, ReliaSoft, Minitab, or JMP.
  • Familiarity with reliability, testing, and quality standards (e.g., Telcordia GR-468, MIL-STD-810, MIL-HDBK-217, JEDEC, IPC J-STD-001, IPC-A-610).
  • Familiarity with space or LEO environmental requirements such as atomic oxygen, thermal vacuum, and radiation.
  • Hands-on experience with environmental test equipment, including thermal chambers, HALT/HASS systems, or vibration tables.
  • Experience with data analysis or test automation scripting using Python, MATLAB, or LabVIEW.
  • Experience with optics, opto-electronics, or optical communication systems.
  • Knowledge of the physics of failure for electrical and opto-mechanical systems for space applications.
