At Regions, the Release Train Engineer manages and optimizes the flow of value through the Agile Release Train. This role involves leading Agile Release Trains (ART), resolving and escalating impediments, managing risks, ensuring value delivery, and driving program-level continuous improvement.
Responsibilities
- Oversee medium-sized or two small to medium release trains with complex scope and inter-dependencies.
- Facilitate the coordinated preparation of release planning for the release train, including communication and coordination with stakeholders and customers during feature definition and delivery.
- Leverage agile delivery metrics and regular Agile ceremonies to identify and drive continuous improvement to maximize organizational performance and execution against the backlog.
- Resolve and report issues, and manage dependencies and risks across the ART and between ARTs.
- Coordinate major feature releases and ongoing delivery of value to customers where multiple teams, release trains, or solution groups are involved in development.
- Coach leaders, teams, and Scrum Masters in Lean-Agile practices and mindsets.
- Manage changes to the quarterly plan and the impacts of those changes.
- Monitor overall coordination, execution, and delivery of value through the program while ensuring alignment with company strategy, commitments, and goals.
- Facilitate communications, opening the flow of information and sharing important progress updates to ensure all teams involved in the ART are focused on successful delivery.
- Create retrospective improvement roadmaps by analyzing all activities and actions that have previously been performed and finding ways to improve each process.
- Understand and operate within the Agile Release Train budget.
- Facilitate periodic sync meetings across trains.
- Track features and capabilities throughout development.
- Facilitate relationships between their teams and other departments.
- Collaborate with the Program Management Office (PMO) to maintain solid program execution and operational excellence.
- Communicate and collaborate with product and solution management, product owners, and other stakeholders to guarantee the alignment of strategy and execution.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field and six (6) years of experience as a Release Train Engineer, Scrum Master, Product Owner, or Agile Project/Program Manager; OR High School Diploma or GED and ten (10) years of experience in the same roles.
- Scaled Agile certifications such as Agile Practitioner or SAFe Certified Release Train Engineer.
Preferences
- Experience leveraging and interpreting agile metrics is preferred.
- Prior management experience.
Skills and Competencies
- Demonstrated ability to facilitate large planning and solutioning sessions.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of numerous well-documented patterns and techniques for filling in the intentional gaps left in the Scrum approach.
- Dynamic leadership skills to manage teams through both direct management and influential leadership.
- Ability to effectively prioritize and assign work to meet deadlines.
- Strong communication skills with both technical and non-technical users at all levels of the organization.
- Excellent leadership skills to manage various stakeholders effectively at the train and solution level.
- Understanding of Agile at scale philosophies and methodologies.
- Ability to track and interpret beneficial metrics, identify risks, and correct project course as needed.
- Understanding of program budgets and how budgeting works within a SAFe environment.
