Relay Field Technician
About the role
As a Relay Field Technician in our Field Engineering department, you will execute commissioning and testing of protection & control schemes and systems for customers’ electric utility substation and plant locations. This includes working with a range of Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) such as relays, meters, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Digital Fault Recorders (DFRs), and interfacing with IEC-61850 or other multifunction media converters or intelligent logic devices. These systems protect, monitor, and control utility distribution, transmission, and power plant assets, including SCADA systems and communications media between IEDs.
Responsibilities
- Red-line design documents throughout the drawing set (Single Line, AC/DC Elementary, Wiring, Panel Arrangement, and Bill of Material/Material List).
- Perform End-To-End testing.
- Conduct IED testing, both manually and with automated test sets (e.g., Doble 6150, Omicron, Manta) for protection & control schemes.
- Identify common risks associated with testing and commissioning protection & control schemes and systems.
- Develop test plans, risk assessments, and practical applications of basic protection & control systems and schemes.
- Analyze scope and drawing interpretations to create comprehensive functional guidelines and risk assessments.
- Lead people and tasks within larger projects or provide technical and people leadership on projects with well-defined scopes.
- Perform weekly site safety inspections.
- Lead the application of HP with the approval of the Project Lead.
- Support Company and Customer policies and procedures.
Requirements
- 5+ years’ experience in relay testing and commissioning in substations.
- Experience handling simple volt-ohm-meter and working with hand tools.
- Ability to read and interpret One Line, AC & DC Elementary, and Wiring diagrams.
- Ability to perform regular field work in various environments, conditions, and weather.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Effective communication in English (reading, writing, and speaking) due to safety-related materials, documentation, and client interactions.
