Power your future with Qualus in our Field Engineering department as a Relay Field Engineer. This role focuses on commissioning and testing protection & control schemes and systems for electric utility substations and plant locations, including Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) such as relays, meters, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Digital Fault Recorders (DFRs), and IEC-61850 or other multifunction media converters.
Responsibilities
- Red-line design documents throughout the drawing set (Single Line, AC/DC Elementary, Wiring, Panel Arrangement, and Bill of Material/Material List).
- Perform End-to-End testing.
- Conduct IED testing, both manually and with automated test sets (e.g., Doble 6150, Omicron, Manta) for protection & control schemes.
- Identify common risks associated with testing and commissioning schemes and systems.
- Develop test plans, risk assessments, and practical applications of basic protection & control systems and schemes.
- Lead people and tasks within larger projects or provide technical and people leadership on projects with well-defined scopes.
- Perform weekly site safety inspections.
- Lead the application of HP with approval from the Project Lead.
- Support Company and Customer policies and procedures.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
- 5+ years’ experience in relay testing and commissioning in substations.
- Experience handling a simple volt-ohm-meter and working with hand tools.
- Ability to read and interpret One Line, AC & DC Elementary, and Wiring diagrams.
- Ability to perform regular field work in various environments, conditions, and weather.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Effective communication in English (reading, writing, and speaking) due to safety-related documentation and client interactions.
