About the role

As a Relay Field Engineer in our Field Engineering department, you will execute commissioning and testing of protection & control schemes and systems for customers’ electric utility substation and plant locations. This includes work with Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) such as relays, meters, Remote Terminal Units (RTUs), Digital Fault Recorders (DFRs), and IEC-61850 or other multifunction media converters or intelligent logic devices. You will also work with SCADA systems and communications media between IEDs.

Responsibilities

  • Red-line design documents throughout the drawing set (Single Line, AC/DC Elementary, Wiring, Panel Arrangement, and Bill of Material/Material List).
  • Perform End-To-End testing.
  • Perform IED testing, both manually and with automated test sets (e.g., Doble 6150, Omicron, Manta) for protection & control schemes.
  • Identify common risks associated with testing and commissioning those schemes and systems.
  • Develop test plans, risk assessments, and practical applications of basic protection & control systems and schemes.
  • Lead people and tasks within a larger project or provide technical and people leadership on projects with well-defined scopes of work.
  • Perform weekly site safety inspections.
  • Lead the application of HP with the approval of the Project Lead.
  • Support Company and Customer policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university.
  • 5+ years’ experience in relay testing and commissioning in substations.
  • Experience handling a simple volt-ohm-meter and working with hand tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret One Line, AC & DC Elementary, and Wiring diagrams.
  • Ability to perform regular field work in various work environments, conditions, and weather.
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (reading and writing) due to the nature of safety-related materials, documentation, and client interactions.
