About the Role

The Rehab Services Tech is a non-licensed staff member who assists professional staff with patient care by performing activities that do not require clinical decision-making. This role supports the Rehabilitation Services Department through both patient care and administrative tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Follows standard precautions and Northwestern Medicine infection control policies and procedures consistently.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly; cleans equipment according to standards.
  • Independently maintains all equipment cleaning logs and performs monthly maintenance.
  • Ensures the environment of care (EOC) meets JCAHO standards at all times.
  • Demonstrates competence in performing tasks identified as appropriate for the Rehab Services Tech.
  • Assists with patient treatment under direct clinical supervision and anticipates therapists’ needs during care.
  • Communicates promptly to the therapist any observed changes in patient status or responses (e.g., pain, distress, or condition changes).
  • Clarifies special procedures or observations with the therapist as needed.
  • Interacts professionally with patients and families, involving them in the plan of care under the therapist’s discretion.
  • Provides explanations to patients and families prior to care and answers questions within scope of practice.
  • Consults other departments to support an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs.
  • Follows all policies and procedures for documentation of treatment rendered by the rehab tech.
  • Communicates with patients and guests, including greeting them upon arrival, confirming identity, and providing visit-related information.
  • Provides accurate and timely updates to patients and customers.
  • Schedules, confirms, and reschedules patient visits at Rehabilitation Services and satellite locations.
  • Obtains patient consents and authorizations.
  • Manages the department-specific Rehabilitation Services Call List and communication needs.
  • Accurately identifies patient medical record numbers to avoid duplication in the system.
  • Obtains and updates patient demographic, insurance, and billing information.
  • Collects co-payments, past due balances, and point-of-service payments.
  • Posts payments, processes billing information, and performs “end of day” cash drawer closing.
  • Manages faxing documentation to insurance companies and/or physician offices for authorization and signatures for the Plan of Care.
  • Manages clinic inventory.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma (required).
  • BLS Certified within 90 days of hire (required).
  • Bachelor’s degree (preferred).
  • Previous experience in a healthcare setting (preferred).
  • Working knowledge of medical terminology (preferred).
  • Bilingual (preferred).
