Regular Education Instructional Assistant

About the Role

To assist the teacher by monitoring and assisting students in the classroom, at lunch, and during other activities to ensure quality instruction in a safe environment. This position also requires serving as a Bus Driver or Sub Bus Driver for a school bus as directed by the principal.

Responsibilities

• Follow all rules, policies, and procedures, along with state and federal regulations pertaining to school issues.
• Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher.
• Monitor work assigned by the teacher and praise and reinforce student achievement.
• Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills based on individual student needs, interests, and abilities.
• Maintain and improve professional competence and participate in supporting the broad school vision.
• Monitor student behavior, maintain discipline in the classroom, record time-outs and in-class suspensions, and assist with crisis prevention and de-escalation techniques.
• Constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students and encourage self-esteem.
• Supervise students during emergency drills, assemblies, play periods, field trips, lunch, recess, specials, hygiene routines, and snack time.
• Alert the teacher to any problems or special information about individual students.
• Perform clerical duties such as maintaining records of student progress, developing and filing incident reports, grading papers, checking daily attendance, making copies, developing classroom displays, and maintaining audiovisual equipment.
• Assist with large group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and storytelling.
• Maintain high ethical behavior and confidentiality of student information.
• Serve as the chief source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the regular teacher.
• Serve as a Bus Driver or Sub Bus Driver for a school bus as required by the principal.

Requirements

• Hold at least an Associate's Degree, or
• Have 48 hours of transferable college coursework, or
• Have completed the Pathways to Teacher Assistant I (48 hours) and the Teacher Assistant Training II (48 hours) for 96 contact hours.
• Meet all qualifications prescribed by the State Board of Education for bus drivers and maintain appropriate bus driver certification at all times.
• Obtain or already hold a North Carolina Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with P&S Endorsements (School Bus Certification) within 180 days of employment.
• Sign a bus driver agreement and be willing to drive a school bus as needed and directed by the school principal.

• General knowledge of classroom activities and routines.
• General knowledge of student handbook rules and emergency procedures.
• Ability to record and store data accurately.

Physical Requirements

• Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers and copiers.
• Must be physically able to operate a motor vehicle.
• Must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body, and exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally.
• Light work usually requires walking or standing to a significant degree.

Pay

Starting salary range: $26,078.00 - $33,616.40 (Grade 56).

Schedule

Ten-month employment, At-Will, FLSA Non-Exempt.
