About the role

The successful candidate will be responsible for the complete and accurate collection of patient demographic information, serving as the initial contact for patient billing, answering hospital switchboard calls, and playing an integral role in disaster procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts patient interviews to obtain accurate demographic and insurance information for inpatient, surgical, emergency room, and outpatient services.
  • Provides patient estimates for outpatient and surgical services, explains benefits to patients/guarantors, and collects out-of-pocket expenses.
  • Reconciles daily banking deposits and prepares them for pickup the next business day.
  • Aids patients in making payments through welcome devices and personal devices.
  • Follows EPIC Insurance Manual guidelines, obtains waiver forms, authorizations, and referrals as needed, and verifies insurance requirements for upcoming services.
  • Verifies insurance requirements for upcoming services according to departmental standards, utilizes various software programs for insurance verification, and scans insurance cards and ID documents.
  • Maintains equipment in safe working condition, notifies appropriate departments of malfunctions, and submits S1 forms when necessary.
  • Maintains a clean work area, communicates with Environmental Services as needed, and participates in cross-training efforts.
  • Attends departmental in-services, staff meetings, and huddles to develop communication skills, learn new forms/procedures, and understand emergency situations.
  • Ensures correct ordering doctors are listed on all orders, validates order expiration, prioritizes workload, and schedules patient procedures/appointments.
  • Coordinates direct admits and transfers, runs required reports, and identifies workqueues for daily accounts.
  • Prepares POS letters for surgical patients who are not active in the Patient Portal, provides assistance to patients using welcome devices, and follows the EPIC Insurance Manual.
  • Adheres to hospital fire, safety, and disaster procedures, maintains confidentiality, and attends to supply needs.
  • Serves as a preceptor/mentor, accepts new responsibilities, reviews patient orders, and ensures 95% or higher workflow accuracy on the Patient Access User Scorecard.
  • Communicates with patients and hospital employees with high regard for customer service, treats all customers with respect, and implements disaster/emergency procedures.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Completion of a medical terminology course is preferred.
  • Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills required.
  • Experience as a registration receptionist preferred.
  • Computer and customer service experience preferred.
  • Minimum typing speed of 45 words per minute preferred.
  • Knowledge of insurances helpful.
