Job Summary

Arranges for the efficient and orderly admission of inpatients and admission of individuals who have hospital-based outpatient testing or procedures. Ensures that the patient information is collected and that patients are aware of hospital policies and procedures. Distributes appropriate information to ancillary departments. Reports to the Patient Access Supervisor.

Summary Of Essential Job Functions

  • Registers patients for hospital services from a physician's office and pre-admits these patients as needed.
  • Admits requirements for patients scheduled for admissions and outpatient procedures, obtains authorization and verifies insurance eligibility.
  • Interviews patients or their representatives, obtains personal information or verifies information already on file, including emergency numbers and insurance information.
  • Provides information to the patient/representative about billing, complaint process, patient rights, and HIPAA. Distributes hospital specific literature.
  • Collects payments, records payment, and forwards to the Business Office personnel when previous arrangements have been made or a co-payment is required.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized, and function well in stressful situations. Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity; ensures confidentiality of patients' records.
  • Interacts professionally with patient/family and provides explanations and verbal reassurance as necessary. Maintains good working relationships both within the department and with other departments.
  • Maintains documentation that meets current standards and policies. Answers the telephone in a polite manner and communicates information to the appropriate personnel/family member.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the Patient Access Supervisor.

Basic Skills

  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Able to type accurately with speed.
  • Able to use office machines efficiently.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.

Education And Experience

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Prefers someone who has at least 6 months experience in a medical office or hospital setting.
