Registrar, Emergency Department (Hourly/Per Diem)
Job Summary
The Department of Ambulatory Care Services at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking an hourly/per diem TH Staff Assistant 2 / Emergency Department Registrar.
- Conducts both quick registrations and full registrations of persons who present for ED services and applies wristbands to patient wrists or ankles.
- Conducts registration of persons who present to ambulatory surgery, endoscopy procedures and L&D.
- Accurately searches for patient files ensuring that duplicate medical records are not assigned.
- Conducts patient interviews to obtain accurate and complete patient demographic and insurance data as necessary.
- Explains and obtains signatures on appropriate hospital forms, including the general consent to treatment, notice of privacy, and patient agreement forms.
- Facilitates transportation for discharged ED patients.
- Reviews registration forms and updates to ensure accurate and complete demographic and financial data. Maintains photo copies of patient’s insurance and identification cards.
- Answers, triages and routes incoming phone calls to ED.
- Verifies coverage and checks eligibility for insurance benefits including Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross, and other insurances.
- Schedules follow-up Outpatient appointments in Acuity or Altera Health bridge.
- Aid Patients and staff members with inquires.
- Prepare the patient’s medical chart with appropriate documentation.
- Maintain knowledge of all organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
- Ensure compliance with HIPAA regulations and relevant hospital policies.
- Admitting Duties:
- Setting up Death Certificates in eVitals system.
- Processing OCME/Funeral Home pick ups.
- Processing Bed Transfer and Patient discharges.
- Processing Chart Conversions from ED outpatient to Observation and Inpatient Levels of Care.
- Inpatient Bed Management/ Bed Assignments.
Required Qualifications
- 1 - 2 years of experience in a healthcare, medical office or hospital setting, particularly in-patient registration, scheduling, or insurance verification.
- Proficiency in medical terminology.
- Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Word).
- Demonstrated ability to function effectively in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Experience with insurance verification (Medicare, Medicaid, HMOs).
- Experience using the EAGLE system or similar Electronic Health Records platform.
- Or, a satisfactory equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
