Registered Respiratory Therapist

About the role

This Night Shift position is located in the Respiratory Care Unit of the Pulmonary Medicine Section of Medical Service at the Lyons NJ VA Medical Center. They serve as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) and performs their duties under the supervision of the Chief - Respiratory Care.

Responsibilities

• Performs diagnostic evaluations and engages in the teaching & treatment of patients including the most unusual and difficult cases requiring the highest levels of expertise and professional skills.
• Collaboratively consults with physicians and other healthcare professionals for complex respiratory care to develop care plans to provide favorable patient outcomes.
• Evaluates the efficacies of therapeutic modalities.
• Performs advanced airway and ventilation management.
• Initiates manual ventilation using a manual resuscitation bag or bag-valve-mask (BVM).
• Maintains ventilation during emergency situations, serving as a member of the Code Blue team in response to Cardiac and/or Respiratory arrests.
• Monitors patients closely to avoid complications and to alter the plan as necessary.
• Initials and continuously assesses the cardiopulmonary condition of assigned patients using data acquired through physical examination, respiratory monitoring, and diagnostic equipment.
• Communicates with physician and suggests alternate modes of treatment as indicated.
• Performs airway and endo-tracheal tube care on patients with artificial airways, including cleaning and securing the trach and endotracheal tube site, in-line suctioning, monitoring tube cuff pressure, and inspecting equipment and patient to insure proper function.
• Operates suction catheters attached to vacuum to remove secretions from patients' airways.
• Placing nasal and oropharyngeal airways and performing nasal and tracheal suctioning.
• May assist with the equipment set-up and bronchoscopy procedure.

Requirements

• Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship, Education, Credential, Licensure, and Grade Determinations.
• Physical Requirements: Physical aspects associated with work required of this assignment are typical for the occupation.

Qualifications

• Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the GS-9 grade level in the Registered Respiratory Therapy field.
• KSAs: Ability to collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals for complex respiratory care to develop care plans to provide favorable patient outcomes; skill in evaluating the efficacies of therapeutic modalities; skill in performing advanced airway and ventilation management.

Skills

• Knowledge of basic medical sciences and how they relate to the respiratory and cardiovascular system.
• Knowledge of infrequently used respiratory equipment, procedures, and techniques.
• Knowledge of advanced ventilation techniques such as pressure control ventilation, tube compensation, and volume and pressure support ventilation.
• Knowledge of respiratory therapy equipment and technology-based equipment.
• Ability to assemble, check, and correct malfunctions and perform quality controls on respiratory therapy equipment and technology-based equipment.
• Ability to maintain supplies, equipment, and clinical areas to optimize safety and efficiency.

Schedule

• Combination of 12-hour 7:00PM - 7:00AM and 8-hour 11:00PM - 7:00AM night shifts.
