Responsibilities

  • Provides direct patient care, including examination and treatment under an approved protocol.
  • Evaluates outcomes and adjusts nursing care processes as needed to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Utilizes the nursing process to implement goal-directed nursing care for obstetrical patients.
  • Monitors medical condition of assigned patients at all times and reports to Physician, Nurse Manager, or Nursing Supervisor any patient care problems, changes in condition, or unexpected occurrences.
  • Functions well in emergency situations according to policies and procedures.
  • Educates patients/family regarding condition, treatment, discharge/transfer planning, and follow-up examinations if needed; seeks feedback to evaluate understanding and documents accordingly.
  • Facilitates a team approach to the patient plan of care, incorporating all disciplines involved.
  • Communicates with physicians and other departments to consult on patient status and ensure continuity of care.
  • Maintains patient’s medical records in an orderly manner and documents all care provided and significant information legibly, accurately, and completely.
  • Provides clinical leadership for other staff members and participates in the orientation of new personnel.
  • Develops, maintains, and enhances necessary skills to work with obstetrical patients.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional development, setting goals, and striving to achieve them through available resources such as attending seminars, in-services, and/or reading journals.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing program.
  • Minimum of six months of job-related experience or equivalent.
  • Current Rhode Island State Licensure as a Registered Nurse.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • For Labor and Delivery: Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications required.
