REGISTERED NURSE (University Hospital-Medical Procedures Unit)

About the Role

We seek highly qualified candidates who will provide compassionate care to adult patient populations in the Medical Procedures Unit at University Hospital (UH MPU). The candidate will demonstrate the ability to organize and manage multiple interventions simultaneously. Candidates should be enthusiastic and patient-oriented individuals interested in creating the ideal experience for our patients, families, and employees, reporting directly to a Clinical Nursing Supervisor.

Candidates will provide nursing care to patients receiving Gastrointestinal Endoscopy or Pulmonary Procedures. Additional specialty procedures performed include ERCP, EUS, Double Balloon, and ION procedures. Candidates will coordinate nursing care between the pre-procedure, intra-procedure, and post-procedure phases, which may include directing other registered nurses, endoscopy technicians, and ancillary health care staff.

Under the direction of a Charge Nurse and/or Clinical Nursing Supervisor, the candidate may function in the endo tech role, which includes supporting procedures, endoscope management, preparing readiness of procedure room, assisting with biopsies and other interventions, and room turnover per infection prevention policy. Candidates will administer sedation/analgesia under the direction of a physician, assess and document hemodynamic status during sedation and post-procedure phases, and initiate and maintain peripheral intravenous lines.

Candidates should be able to provide patient and family-centered education and discharge teaching based on learning needs. They will have excellent computer skills with proficiency in all Microsoft software applications and participate in developing department goals and objectives by attending staff meetings, in-service programs, continuing education opportunities, and quality improvement initiatives.

Responsibilities

• Coordinate nursing care between pre-procedure, intra-procedure, and post-procedure phases, including directing other registered nurses, endoscopy technicians, and ancillary health care staff.
• Function in the endo tech role, supporting procedures, managing endoscopes, preparing procedure rooms, assisting with biopsies, and ensuring room turnover per infection prevention policy.
• Administer sedation/analgesia under physician direction and assess/document hemodynamic status during sedation and post-procedure phases.
• Initiate and maintain peripheral intravenous lines.
• Provide patient and family-centered education and discharge teaching based on learning needs.
• Demonstrate critical thinking using the nursing process, problem-solving skills, and ability to set priorities.
• Participate in staff meetings, in-service programs, continuing education, and quality improvement initiatives.
• Assist with pre-procedure calls to patients undergoing procedures at UH MPU.
• Wear lead for extended periods if required.
• Actively support performance improvement activities related to self, clinic, department, and institutional goals.
• Other responsibilities as assigned.

Requirements

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN) to practice nursing in Michigan.
• Minimum two (2) years of RN experience (at full-time status) within the past five (5) years in any of the following specialties: Procedures, Preop/PACU, ICU, ED, Sedation Analgesia Professional, Flight Nurse, or OR.
• Current ACLS certification.
• Ability to stand for extended periods.
• One (1) year in the last five (5) years demonstrated proficiency with documentation in an electronic health record (e.g., Epic).
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills as evidenced by resume, annual evaluations, and references.

Qualifications (Desired)

• Gastrointestinal Endoscopy or procedural nursing experience in an inpatient or outpatient care setting within the last 5 years.
• BSN degree.
• Clinical nursing certification in Gastroenterology, Peri Anesthesia, or Ambulatory Care nursing.
• PALS certification.
• Excellence in communication skills (verbal and written).
• Excellent attendance as evidenced by previous work performance evaluations and/or attendance records.
• Ability to establish and maintain collaborative multi-disciplinary team relationships, prioritize duties, and multi-task with minimal supervision.
• Proficiency in using and documenting in an electronic medical record.
• Ability to problem-solve independently.
• Accountability to Departmental and Regulatory requirements.
• Flexibility in accepting changing clinical assignments on short notice.

Pay

• Hourly range for Registered Nurses: $41.78 - $64.81/hour.
• Shift differentials:
  • Evening Shift: +$3.00/hour
  • Night Shift: +$4.00/hour
  • Day Shift Weekend: +$2.90/hour
  • Evening Shift Weekend: +$5.90/hour
  • Night Shift Weekend: +$6.90/hour
  • Charge Nurse: +$1.00/hour

Schedule

• Hours/week: 40 hours.
• 4 ten-hour shifts.
• Shift: Day/Evening shift; Monday through Saturday; variable hours between 7:00 am to 10:00 pm.
• Some evening and weekend on-call required.
• Some holiday on-call required.
• Flexibility in scheduling is required.
• All new employees will be expected to float to a designated unit(s) in times of low census.
