About the role

As the Registered Nurse Supervisor, you will provide direct supervision and clinical leadership to Licensed Vocational Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, and the interdisciplinary care team within a recuperative care/medical respite setting. This role serves individuals experiencing homelessness with complex medical, psychiatric, and substance use recovery needs. You will oversee referral screening, intake coordination, and ensure appropriate admissions and continuity of care. Additionally, you will support staff in promoting client stability, preventing hospital admissions, readmissions, and system disengagement through outreach, advocacy, health education, and care coordination.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision, leadership, and clinical oversight to nursing staff, including Licensed Vocational Nurses and Certified Nursing Assistants.
  • Screen referrals and coordinate intakes from the Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center, local contracted hospitals, Medi-Cal Managed Care Plans, and other partnering agencies.
  • Determine medical and psychiatric stability for safe on-site admission, including evaluating neurological status and level of consciousness.
  • Plan, prioritize, and assign general healthcare tasks to the clinical support team to ensure effective workflow and quality care delivery.
  • Support staff in managing high-acuity cases, crisis situations, and complex client needs.
  • Assist in creating, implementing, and maintaining nursing policies and procedures to foster a structured, compliant, and positive work environment.
  • Manage medication support processes and ensure clear communication with the nursing and interdisciplinary team to prevent medication-related errors.
  • Serve as a primary point of communication between clients, nursing staff, and medical providers to ensure coordinated care.
  • Oversee client admissions, care progression, and discharge processes to ensure safe and appropriate transitions.
  • Provide ongoing education to staff on current trends and best practices in nursing within a recuperative care/medical respite setting.
  • Encourage adherence to the highest standards of client care, safety, and professional practice.
  • Monitor, evaluate, and support staff performance through regular coaching, feedback, and formal performance reviews.
  • Assist in recruitment, onboarding, training, and retention of nursing staff.
  • Ensure staff compliance with clinical protocols, regulatory standards, and organizational policies, including HIPAA requirements.
  • Maintain oversight of client and employee records to ensure accuracy, confidentiality, and quality standards.
  • Facilitate team communication, lead or participate in case reviews, and contribute to multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Identify training needs and coordinate ongoing staff development opportunities.
  • Address performance concerns in collaboration with the Program Manager, including documentation and corrective action as needed.
  • Provide guidance to newly licensed RNs, LVNs, CNAs, staff, interns, and volunteers.
  • Assist with training and educate staff and clients on medical-related topics.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and collect client care metrics for process improvement.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential documentation in compliance with agency and regulatory standards.
  • Complete assigned trainings and policies in a timely manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise staff within the recuperative care program, providing daily supervision of tasks and leadership.
  • Recommend hiring and firing decisions, conduct corrective action as needed, and perform performance evaluations.
  • Identify and promote professional development opportunities.
  • Identify areas where volunteers are needed and collaborate with the Lead Volunteer Coordinator in recruiting new volunteers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing, required.
  • Active CA Registered Nurse License, required.
  • Two to five years of clinical nursing experience, required.
  • Two to five years of experience in a social services, nonprofit, community health, or residential care setting, required.
  • Two to five years of experience in a supervisory role or a role with increasing responsibility in behavioral health, homeless services, or medical respite, required.
  • Experience working with people experiencing homelessness, severe mental illness, medically fragile conditions, and substance use populations, preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for healthcare providers (American Heart Association preferred), to be completed within three months of hire.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English), preferred.

  • Working knowledge and skills in mental health, co-occurring disorders, substance abuse treatment models, and crisis intervention.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple staff and working collaboratively to drive successful projects to completion.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Ability to communicate effectively among a diverse workforce and maintain sound working relations at all levels within the organization.
  • Work with a spirit of teamwork, cooperation, and a sense of urgency.
  • Maintain a high degree of confidentiality over all matters in the course of business operations, including client and employee information.
  • Ability to work on tasks efficiently, thoroughly, and in a prioritized manner.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to perform work in an office setting.
  • May be subjected to adverse conditions, including contact from hostile individuals.
  • Potential exposure to contagious diseases, hazardous chemicals, and other hazardous fluids.
  • Must have the physical ability to sit for long periods, stand, walk, bend, and kneel on a frequent basis.
  • Occasionally lifts, carries, and balances objects weighing up to 30 pounds.
  • Pulls and pushes objects such as file drawers, computers, and similar office equipment.
  • Prioritizes and multi-tasks work and projects requiring good memory, concentration, and analytical thinking.
  • Occasionally required to perform the safe operation of office equipment and machines, and recognize and abate safety hazards within the workplace.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually low.

Monday-Friday: 8am-5pm

$106,830-$130,570
