Overview
The Registered Nurse Supervisor reports to the Director of Nursing and the Assistant Director of Nursing. This role combines clinical expertise, leadership, and administrative skills to ensure high-quality patient care, efficient nursing operations, and professional development of nursing staff. The supervisor maintains compliance with healthcare standards and fosters a safe, compassionate, and effective care environment.
Duties
- Supervises and mentors a team of registered nurses and other healthcare staff.
- Manages staffing levels, scheduling, and workload distribution to ensure efficient and effective operation of the unit.
- Ensures the delivery of high-quality patient care in accordance with organizational policies and procedures.
- Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to develop and implement care plans for patients.
- Makes sure the performance of team members is monitored and evaluated, providing regular feedback and coaching.
- Participates in quality improvement initiatives and performance improvement projects.
- Maintains current knowledge of healthcare regulations, standards, and best practices.
- Acts as a liaison between staff, patients, and families, and healthcare providers.
- Handles patient complaints and addresses any issues or concerns in a professional and timely manner.
- Ensures that all required nursing documentation is completed within established timeframes; reviews all documentation required by the RN, LPN, and Nurse Aide for accuracy and completeness, and provides direction accordingly.
- Makes sure medication passes and treatment schedules are monitored to ensure medications are being administered as ordered, treatments are provided as scheduled, and storage and control of medications and supplies are maintained.
- Completes quality improvement audits.
- Completes performance appraisals on employees and annual competencies and training in accordance with required timeframes.
- Sets up recommendations for disciplinary actions, ensuring adherence to policies, procedures, and contractual language.
- Ensures compliance with current applicable federal, state, and local regulations and facility policies and procedures.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or directed by nursing administration.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Nursing and medical practices and procedures.
- Laws, regulations, and guidelines that govern long-term care.
- Microsoft Office Suite.
- Electronic Health Record (EHR).
- Organizing facts, ideas, and communicating effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Seeking new methods and principles and incorporating them into existing practices.
- Managing and directing a culturally diverse workforce.
- Communicating with medical and nursing staff as well as other departments.
- Working with ill, disabled, elderly, and emotionally labile people within a long-term care facility.
- Planning, organizing, directing, controlling, coordinating, and evaluating the quality and appropriateness of care and treatment provided by both professional nursing staff and direct care staff in the assigned unit.
- Promoting safe work practices, safety rules, and accident-prevention procedures to prevent employee injuries and illnesses.
- Maintaining general health requirements according to facility policy, including medical and physical exams and checking immunity status to various infectious diseases.
- Aiding in evacuating residents during emergency situations.
- Working beyond normal working hours and on weekends, holidays when necessary.
Residency
Not required to live in Allegheny County.
