About the role
The purpose of this class is to provide professional nursing services in a correctional environment using the nursing process to meet the medical, psychosocial, and emotional healthcare needs of inmate-patients. The Registered Nurse works collaboratively with physicians, dentists, healthcare staff, and security personnel, frequently guided by established nursing protocols. The incumbent may function as a team leader and provide supervision to Licensed Practical Nurses/Vocational Nurses and unlicensed paraprofessional staff as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Deliver comprehensive nursing care to inmate-patients using established clinical protocols
- Respond to medical emergencies, including performing CPR when required
- Conduct intake assessments, sick call evaluations, and chronic care clinics
- Administer medications, IV therapy, and treatments per the physician's orders
- Document care accurately in medical records and medication logs
- Collaborate with physicians, dentists, healthcare staff, and security personnel
- Supervise and delegate tasks to LPNs and healthcare support staff
- Maintain strict control of medications, sharps, and medical equipment
- Educate patients and staff on health and safety practices
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing with current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment
- A minimum of one (1) year of experience in correctional, emergency, or acute care nursing is preferred
- Must possess and maintain a valid Registered Nurse license in the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Must successfully pass a background check before any offer of employment or promotion
- This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City’s current substance abuse policy
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain a satisfactory driving record in accordance with City of Hampton criteria, if required by assignment
Qualifications
- Minimum requirements include a high school diploma/GED, some college, associates degree, bachelors degree, master's or higher
- Experience in correctional, emergency, or acute care nursing is preferred
- Flexible work schedule and on-call employment are required
- At least 18 years of age or older
- No visible tattoos on hands, neckline, or above face that are visible while in uniform
- Ability to perform essential functions of the job for which you are applying, with or without reasonable accommodations
- No experimentation with illegal drugs or substances within the last twelve months
- No conviction in any court of law of any criminal charge, whether felony or misdemeanor
- No arrest or charge with any criminal offense
- No tickets or summonses for any violation of traffic laws
- No victim of any criminal act that was reported to legal authorities
- No involvement in any misconduct with an inmate or co-worker
- No conviction of DUI, DWI, or any serious driving-related offense within the past five years
- No conviction of driving with a suspended or revoked license
