About the Role

The Radiation Oncology RN functions as an integral member of the radiation oncology team, providing patient care and supportive services to achieve patient care outcomes. This role involves assessing and addressing actual and potential problems for patients and families related to the disease process, treatment course, and follow-up period. Responsibilities include teaching, counseling, and supporting patients and families to cope with and adjust to cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Responsibilities

  • Functions independently and interdependently with the radiation oncology team to provide quality patient care.
  • Provides clinical care, nursing consultation, and education related to oncology care and radiation therapy delivery.
  • Performs assessment, diagnosis, outcome identification, planning, implementation, and evaluation for patients receiving radiotherapy, focusing on the continuum of care.
  • Participates in leadership roles such as clinician, educator, consultant, and/or researcher.
  • Collaborates and consults with patients, families, and the multidisciplinary team to enhance clinical outcomes.
  • Communicates significant changes in patient status to the radiation oncologist and carries out nursing action plans.
  • Coordinates the flow and care of radiation oncology patients in the clinic as part of the nursing team.
  • Assesses patient, family, and caregiver learning needs, abilities, and readiness to learn, identifying barriers such as language or culture and integrating this into the plan of care.
  • Documents education needs in collaboration with other disciplines and implements ongoing education relevant to these needs.
  • Explains tests, procedures, disease processes, medications, and equipment to patients and families throughout treatment.
  • Performs other related functions as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) licensure.
  • Associate Degree, Registered Nurse Diploma, or Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
  • No prior experience required.
  • No travel required.
