About the Role

The Operations Administrator (OA) provides operational oversight and leadership throughout Houston Methodist Hospital. This position leads in unforeseen situations, making timely decisions that directly impact patient care, and fosters interdepartmental/interprofessional collaboration aligned with Houston Methodist’s mission and values. The OA ensures effective communication, clinical guidance in patient care management, staffing, and policy implementation, creating an environment for safe patient care delivery. This role requires critical thinking, self-direction, initiative, and strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Responsibilities

People

  • Assigns available personnel, assesses triage assignments, and modifies staffing during the shift as necessary.
  • Plans and coordinates staffing needs for current and upcoming shifts.
  • Role models interprofessional communication, including active listening, teaching, and sharing organizational and clinical information respectfully.
  • Conducts fair and consistent leadership for team dynamics, problem resolution, and coaching; supports policy adherence and disciplinary measures when appropriate.
  • Assists with staff stress management as needed.
  • Improves department scores for turnover, retention, and employee engagement.

Service

  • Coordinates and expedites admission, discharge, transfer, and bed control processes to optimize patient flow.
  • Monitors and facilitates smooth, timely patient flow and provides bed assignment support as needed.
  • Oversees hospital operations during the shift, manages administrative issues, and documents pertinent information for leadership.
  • Partners with public relations to manage outside media.
  • Troubleshoots patient/family care, visitor, and facility issues during off-shifts and weekends.
  • Drives service standards to improve patient satisfaction through role modeling and accountability.

Quality/Safety

  • Monitors and analyzes work methods and staff scheduling, making adjustments to ensure high service quality and cost-effectiveness.
  • Maintains awareness of emergency codes and disaster preparedness; coordinates critical situations and uses teachable moments to improve safety.
  • Leads or participates in department process improvements.

Finance

  • Attends daily care coordination rounds to facilitate patient progression.
  • Manages bed closures, staffing allocation, and cancellations to optimize efficiencies and reduce overtime.
  • Implements strategies to achieve financial targets and staffing needs, mentoring others on timely documentation, efficiency, and minimizing incidental overtime.

Growth/Innovation

  • Serves as a mentor/role model and participates in hospital quality, service, and shared governance councils; makes recommendations for cross-departmental improvements.
  • Supports change initiatives and adapts to unexpected changes.
  • Identifies developmental needs for self and staff, ensuring career discussions and individual development plans (IDPs) are updated regularly.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited school of nursing; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Five years of hospital nursing experience; for internal candidates, four years of nursing experience with progressive leadership (e.g., charge nurse responsibilities).

Qualifications

  • Demonstrates skills and competencies necessary for safe job performance through ongoing assessments and evaluations.
  • Proficiency in English (speaking, reading, writing) for effective communication impacting patient and employee safety.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, physicians, families, and coworkers in a customer-focused manner.
  • Resolves conflicts in a timely and professional manner.
  • Demonstrates professionalism, excellent customer service, and adaptability in a fast-paced environment.
  • Exhibits problem-solving skills, including investigation, cause identification, and corrective action development.

Licenses and Certifications

  • RN – Registered Nurse (Texas State Licensure – Texas Board of Nursing). Compact Licensure accepted; must obtain permanent Texas license within 60 days if establishing residency.
  • BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA – American Heart Association).
  • NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI – Crisis Prevention Institute) within 90 days.
  • Magnet ANCC-recognized Certification (HM) within 1 year.

Night shift.

  • On-call: May be required during emergencies (e.g., disasters, severe weather).
  • Travel: May require travel within the Houston Metropolitan area.
