Position Summary

This position coordinates total nursing care for patients, participates in patient and family teaching, acts as a patient advocate and works as part of a team with ancillary and non-nursing departments.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs plan of care intervention, including medication administration, specimen collection, clinical treatments, as well as other medical care treatment.
  • Documents patient care given.
  • Maintains patient condition and communicates with care team, physician, patient, and family.
  • Affords assistance with activities of daily living, personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams for patient care coordination, including patient transfer, discharge, referral, and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
  • Evaluates learning needs of patient and/or family and provides patient/family education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
  • Works as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the patient.
  • Affords assessment of the patient's condition and nursing care needs.
  • Sets goals and prescribes appropriate nursing interventions to meet physical, psychological, social and rehabilitative needs of patients.
  • Implements care plans and makes revisions as needed.
  • Evaluates patient care outcomes.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other hospital employees.
  • Administers medications, treatments and therapies.
  • Communicates with patients and oversees provision of care.
  • Provides patients and/or family with instruction and education relevant to condition.
  • Accurately documents nursing observations, assessments, medications, treatments, and other care given.

Non-Essential Functions

  • Affords assistance with orientation and training of personnel and students.
  • Participates and attends meetings as required and/or assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Education: Associate's Degree in Nursing required; Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.
  • Minimum Work Experience: One or more years of recent Labor and Delivery, Postpartum and Newborn Nursery experience preferred.
  • Certifications: BCLS upon completion of hospital orientation; ACLS and PALS within six months of hire or transfer date to position. Current American Heart Association BLS Certification (or) obtained within 90 days after hire date; Current S.T.A.B.L.E. certification OR obtained after 6 months of nursery experience but prior to completing 12 months of nursery experience. Successful completion of Neonatal Resuscitation certification within 90 days after hire date.
  • Skills And Abilities: Ability to understand, communicate, and react effectively to patient and family needs. Critical thinking. Work well under pressure while keeping calm and maintaining customer focus.
  • Physical And Mental Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Works in well-lit, ventilated and climate-controlled office environment with routine office equipment; some equipment has moving mechanical parts. In hospital environment, may be exposed to hazards and unusual elements, which may include but are not limited to bloodborne pathogens and / or contagious illnesses, toxic chemicals, and biohazardous materials which may require extensive safety precautions and the use of protective equipment. Noise level in the work environment is typical for an office and/or hospital environment.
