Mary Black Emergency Department is a 24-bed ER open to new graduates, seeing approximately 120-125 patients per day with a 1:4 patient ratio (1:6 in fast track).

About the Role

The Acute Care Registered Nurse (RN) provides inpatient nursing care in compliance with the SC Nurse Practice Act and organizational protocols, policies, procedures, and guidelines. The RN demonstrates clinical competency using evidence-based practices and research across the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, and outcomes. The role involves patient advocacy, clinical pathways, team dynamics, and serving as a resource for support associates. The RN collaborates with leadership to uphold the healthcare system's culture, mission, vision, and values while engaging with the communities served.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate competency using electronic health records and basic computer skills.
  • Document all aspects of patient care following established charting procedures to reflect patient progress or changes in condition.
  • Adhere to system-required standards of behavior and proper chain of command.
  • Meet continuing education requirements and ensure compliance with clinical expectations of regulatory agencies (DNV, DHEC, CMS).
  • Communicate effectively with patients, families, providers, and hospital associates.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and respond to facility alert, medical alert, and medical emergency systems.
  • Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise a plan of care based on physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational needs of the patient/family.
  • Provide a safe patient care environment.
  • Collaborate with patients, families, and healthcare team members to determine priorities and treatments.
  • Coordinate, provide, and direct patient teaching activities.
  • Initiate and facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration to enhance outcomes.
  • Seek assistance in completing nursing interventions to ensure positive patient outcomes.
  • Demonstrate competencies for new equipment, procedures, and annual competency validation.
  • Complete hospital and unit-based orientation programs and annual competencies.
  • Formulate a plan for personal professional growth.
  • Recommend the development or revision of policies and procedures.
  • Serve on unit-based committees as assigned.
  • Prioritize nursing interventions for an assigned group of patients.
  • Critically assess patients' medical history, admitting diagnosis, physician orders, nursing history, physical assessment, diagnostic data, and interviews to determine needs.
  • Properly assess and prioritize multiple patients based on severity of illness, injury, or needs.
  • Provide quality patient care in a fast-paced, dynamic environment through critical thinking and assessment.
  • Interact professionally with patients of all age groups, diverse backgrounds, and varying educational levels, including those who may be confused, irrational, agitated, or uncooperative.
  • Utilize nursing standards and protocols to manage and stabilize emergencies until the provider responds.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of professional nursing practice and theory.
  • Ensure continuity of care through effective decision-making for quality patient outcomes.
  • Remain committed to unit, department, and division goals.
  • Support patient experience initiatives, including purposeful rounding, bedside shift reports, and huddles.
  • Comply with current policies, procedures, and clinical pathways to drive the plan of care.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Education: Graduate of an approved/accredited School of Nursing.
  • Experience: Novice to expert nurse.
  • Licensure/Certifications: Current RN licensure in the State of South Carolina or a Compact State; BLS (may secure certification post-hire).

Preferred Qualifications

  • One year of recent RN experience within the past 5 years.
