Pay

Smithfield, Virginia Hiring Range: $38.60 – $53.08 per hour. Actual pay is determined based on job-related factors such as relevant experience, education, credentials, skills, internal equity, and business needs.

About the role

Works under the supervision of the Nurse Manager to assess, plan, make nursing diagnoses, implement, and evaluate care for patients with fecal or urinary diversion, patients with wound and skin problems, and pressure ulcers. Provides continuity of care for ostomy and skin care patients by improving the competence, performance, and understanding of the nursing staff; functions as a consultant for patients with ostomies, complex wounds, fistulas, pressure ulcers, and skin problems; and serves as a resource for nursing, allied, and medical staffs, patients, families, and the community. Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care, including principles of growth and development across the life span, and the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status to identify age-specific needs. Assumes responsibility for attending seminars and in-service programs to promote growth and development. May be required to be on call for departmental needs.

Responsibilities

• Place orders for ostomy, wound, and selected skin care supplies; maintain appropriate products for RRMC and distribute as needed.
• Meet with representatives from wound and ostomy manufacturing companies to assess and trial new products and technology; make recommendations to the Value Analysis Team.
• Coordinate the operation of the Outpatient Ostomy Clinic.
• Maintain a safe patient care environment by complying with RHS policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements (DNV/OSHA/State) supporting National Patient Safety Goals and Quality Initiatives; recognize and report variances and provide resolutions.
• Maintain patient and job activity statistics daily and submit to Manager/Director monthly.
• Coordinate with the Ostomy Wound Education Program for Riverside Medical Education facilitating MDs (3rd year Residents) for clinical rounds.
• Provide ongoing education to all RRMC clinical staff, including in-services.
• Serve as preceptor to nursing students from Riverside School of Professional Nursing.
• Chair the Skin Integrity Team for RRMC.
• Teach ostomy patients and/or significant others ostomy self-care and document appropriately in the electronic medical record.
• Assure safe practices per National Patient Safety Goals and support safe practices recommended by the National Quality Forum; assure evidence-based practice per NPUAP, NDNQI, and CWOCN Society.
• Establish management procedures for patients with altered skin integrity, wounds, and/or fistulas and document in the electronic medical record.
• Actively participate in RHS ET Nurse committee quarterly, collaborating to develop order sets, integumentary documentation, product recommendations, and policies/procedures related to ostomy, skin, and wound care; serve as liaison with Value Analysis Team.
• May conduct Tele Medicine Consults within RHS and document in the electronic medical record.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (Preferred)
• Associate's Degree in Nursing (Required) or Professional Nurse Diploma Program Graduate (Required)
• High School Diploma or GED (Required only if Nursing Diploma Program Graduate)

Experience

• 2 years Wound Care experience (Preferred)

Licenses and Certifications

• Registered Nurse (RN) – Virginia Department of Health Professions (VDHP) or licensed in a compact state (Required upon hire)
• CPR/BLS Certification – American Heart Association / American Red Cross / American Safety and Health Institute (Required upon hire)
• Certified Wound Care Nurse (Preferred)
