Responsibilities
- Pre-Procedure Care
- Perform pre-procedure nursing assessments and review relevant clinical information.
- Verify patient identity, procedure, NPO status, medication reconciliation and consent according to institutional policy.
- Initiate intravenous access and prepare patients for procedures.
- Collaborate with the procedural team regarding case planning.
- Document required information in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Provide patient and family education regarding the procedure and recovery expectations.
- Intra-Procedure Care
- Sedation RN: Administer and monitor moderate sedation in accordance with organizational policy and credentialing requirements.
- Perform a pre-sedation assessment, including verification of allergies and NPO status, and ensure that the airway evaluation and ASA classification are documented in accordance with policy.
- Continuously monitor patient status including cardiac rhythm, blood pressure, respiratory status, oxygen saturation, and level of consciousness.
- Maintain airway patency and respond to sedation-related complications.
- Communicate patient status with the procedural team and document medications and monitoring parameters in the EMR.
- Circulating RN: Coordinate nursing care in the procedure room and ensure completion of patient identification, procedure verification, and procedural time-out.
- Maintain a safe procedural environment and assist with patient positioning and monitoring setup.
- Aid in administering medications per provider order and assist with vascular access site management when appropriate.
- Recognize and respond to procedural complications such as bleeding, arrhythmias, or respiratory compromise.
- Communicate patient status, manage specimens, and document care and procedural events in the EMR.
- Post-Procedure Care
- Receive and recover patients following procedures and perform post-procedure assessments including vital signs, neurological status, and access site evaluation.
- Monitor for hemodynamic or respiratory changes.
- Manage pain, nausea, and other recovery needs.
- Assess and manage vascular access sites and maintain hemostasis.
- Administer medications and treatments as ordered.
- Educate patients and caregivers regarding recovery, medications, activity restrictions, and signs of complications.
- Coordinate patient transfer or discharge and provide appropriate handoff communication.
- Education: Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing. Evidence of continuing education appropriate for skill level and area of practice.
- Licenses/ Certifications: Current RN license in the State of Oregon; current BLS, ACLS certification.
- Experience: IR Experience; at least one year’s experience in critical care, emergency, cath lab; at least three years of experience in Interventional Radiology or Cath Lab, conscious sedation training, monitor role experience.
- Other: Infusion pumps, PCA pumps, and other medical equipment, computer, printer, photocopier, and patient charts.
- Physical Requirements: Sufficient auditory ability to detect and respond to various sounds, clear and effective communication, visual acuity, tactile perception, motor coordination, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, lifting to 50 pounds independently, frequent pushing, pulling, carrying, or repositioning of objects or patients weighing up to 25 pounds, occasional lifting or transferring of individuals weighing over 100 pounds, ability to respond quickly to changing circumstances, ability to work in a fast-paced and unpredictable environment, exposure to infectious and contagious diseases, hazardous materials, and medical equipment.
