Responsibilities

• Assume primary leadership accountability and responsibility for milieu management and directing patient care activities of other nursing staff
• Maintain standards of professional nursing practice in accordance with facility policy and procedures, governing bodies, performance improvement standards, and psychiatric nursing standards
• Assess patients utilizing the nursing process to formulate an individualized plan of care, implement interventions, and evaluate outcomes
• Interpret age/disability-specific information in response to the client population served
• Provide safe delivery of medication in accordance with policies, procedures, physicians’ orders, and current practice
• Ensure thorough, accurate reporting, and documentation of patient symptoms, responses, and progress
• Assume responsibility for professional development, continuing education, and maintaining licensure
• Utilize the nursing process (assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, evaluation) to develop nursing interventions and individualized care plans
• Identify risk levels, precautions, and expected outcomes, including discharge planning; prescribe and evaluate interventions
• Conduct ongoing patient assessments from admission to discharge; initiate crisis intervention as needed
• Demonstrate knowledge of psychiatric disorders and appropriate nursing interventions; apply interventions to progress patients toward wellness
• Administer medications safely, provide education on prescribed medications, and recognize adverse drug reactions
• Demonstrate professionalism, accountability, and critical thinking in decision-making and psychiatric nursing care
• Review, revise, and update medical records within facility guidelines and timeframes
• Transcribe and implement physician’s orders; document care, progress, and responses accurately and concisely
• Follow up on client care responsibilities, communicate incomplete assignments, and ensure continuity of care
• Implement staff assignments and delegation of duties using sound judgment; advocate for patient needs and safety
• Utilize nursing knowledge and resources to meet facility, patient, and staff needs; enhance evidence-based practice
• Float among various clinical services where qualified and competent; perform other duties as assigned

Requirements

• Current, valid, and active license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of employment (valid Compact licenses acceptable)
• Minimum of an Associate Degree in Nursing
• One year of inpatient hospital experience strongly preferred
• Ability to adapt to a high-stress environment and assess potential for patient escalation
• Effective oral and written communication skills to achieve positive results with internal and external customers
• Highly organized with understanding and sensitivity to serve culturally diverse and special needs populations (e.g., Chronically Mentally Ill, Geriatric, Chemical Dependency)
• Basic knowledge of normal physical and emotional development
• Critical thinking abilities for continuous improvement of patient care
• Self-confidence and ability to think conceptually in leading and directing others
• Must successfully complete CPR certification and an Oceans-approved behavioral health de-escalation program

Schedule

• Saturdays and Sundays, with a 3rd flexible day
• Hours: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM (12-hour rotating shifts)

Work Environment

• Subject to frequent interruptions and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries
• High-paced and potentially stressful; requires mental and physical coping abilities
• May experience disagreeable odors, sights, and unpredictable patient behavior
• Approximately 90% or more of time spent indoors with protection from weather but not necessarily temperature changes
