Registered Nurse/Registered Nurse Senior

Multiple part-time (at least 64 hours per two-week pay period) and full-time positions are available in either the Registered Nurse (RN) or RN Senior classification. These are rotating day/evening or straight night shifts, including weekends and holidays as assigned. Employees receive a $2.75 per hour shift differential for hours worked between 6:00 pm and 6:00 am.

About the role

A correctional health care nurse practices in a primary care setting similar to a clinic or transitional care unit. The role involves using a full range of nursing skills and broad knowledge of disease processes while working closely with other health care providers, including primary care physicians and mid-level practitioners. The nurse ensures individuals receive necessary healthcare without compromising security within the correctional facility.

These positions assist in providing individual health care, managing the medication process, maintaining accurate medical records, delivering health education, and ensuring adequate inventory and security of medical supplies and equipment.

Responsibilities

• Provide individual health care to incarcerated individuals.
• Assist in the medication administration process.
• Perform delegated functions as assigned by the charge nurse or supervisor.
• Maintain accurate and thorough medical record-keeping systems.
• Deliver health education to patients.
• Manage and secure medical supplies and equipment inventory.

Requirements

• Current, active, and unrestricted Minnesota Registered Nurse (RN) license.
• For RN Senior positions: Must be a current or former State of Minnesota employee with permanent or probationary status in the RN Senior job classification, eligible to transfer, demote, or reinstate to the RN Senior job class.
• Completion of pre-placement physical components, including tuberculosis screening and/or respirator clearance, may be required.
• Selected finalist must review and sign a Physical Demands Analysis (PDA).
• Top candidate(s) must pass a criminal history check, including successful completion of all sentencing and/or restitution requirements, employment history/reference checks, and review of job performance and discipline records.
• New employees will be fingerprinted within the first 30 days of employment.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States; the Minnesota Department of Corrections does not sponsor work visas.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience as an RN Senior with the State of Minnesota.
• Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN).
• Hands-on clinical nursing experience providing direct patient care in a hospital, long-term care, and/or clinic setting.
• Nursing experience in a correctional or secured setting.
• Experience working in a correctional or secured setting.
• Nursing experience in specialized clinical areas such as gender-specific, geriatric, juvenile health care, medical/surgery unit, and/or behavioral health.
• Effective communication skills for accurate, concise, and timely information sharing, confidentiality protection, and participation in problem-solving activities.
• Strong critical thinking skills and ability to multi-task.

Pay

• Registered Nurse: $40.59 - $60.06 per hour.
• Registered Nurse Senior: $42.20 - $62.48 per hour.
