About the role
At Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, our Registered Nurses are critical members of the team who diagnose and treat responses to actual or potential health problems by means of nursing methods and techniques such as case finding, health teaching and counseling. Incumbents provide care supporting to and restorative of health and well-being, while adhering to a medical regimen.
Job Duties & Essential Functions
- Assess the patient’s condition and nursing needs; coordinate nursing care activities with other health disciplines involved in the treatment effort to relate and integrate the nursing regimen with the treatment plan for patients.
- Develop a written individualized care plan which includes teaching needs and discharge planning.
- Administer direct care when professional nursing skills and judgment are needed.
- Administer medication.
- Practice infection control and participate in the maintenance of a clean and safe environment.
- Absorbs responsibility and accountability for the delivery of nursing care to all assigned patients.
- Communicates changes in patient’s condition and questions regarding patient care to Charge RN/Clinician.
- Develops and maintains current written plan of care for assigned patients.
- Sets priorities to meet the patient’s needs.
- Sets patient goals and priorities with the patient and/or family.
- Provides document evidence in the medical record of patient/family teaching and their responses and understanding of the teaching.
- Ensures that patient education and instructions are consistent with that of the physician or designee.
- Communicates and works effectively with other staff and other departments.
- Participates in unit or hospital-based quality assurance activities or committees to contribute to the advancement of the nursing profession at SBSH.
- Assists with Breast Cancer biopsies and patient care.
Required Experience And Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Possession of or eligibility for a license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New York State.
- Basic Life Support ("BLS") certification required.
- Conscious Sedation Competency certification required or must be obtained within 3 months of hire.
- Telemetry and Critical Care, Cardiac Rhythm monitoring knowledge required.
- Current experience in Radiology, Breast Cancer.
- Excellent IV skills, Cardiac Catheterization, and Interventional Radiology.
- Advanced Cardial Life Support ""ACLS" certification preferred.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science in nursing degree preferred.
Physical Demands
- Ability to stand, walk, and move quickly for extended periods, especially during emergencies.
- Ability to assist with patient transfers, repositioning and physical interventions, if needed.
- Lifting and/or transferring patients, including those who may be physically aggressive or uncooperative, with the use of appropriate safety techniques and equipment.
- Handling equipment and supplies needed for emergency care.
- Reacting quickly to situations involving physical restraint, patient agitation, or aggression.
- Providing physical support in restraining or de-escalating patients if necessary.
- Ability to use medical instruments, perform assessments, administer medications, and manage equipment with precision.
- Proving physical support in restraining or de-escalating patients if necessary.
- Ability to maintain physical and mental alertness during long shifts, including night shifts and weekends.
- Capacity to manage high-stress situations with clear decision-making and physical capacity.
- Ability to manage the emotional and physical challenges that come with caring for patients who may be agitated or experiencing mental health crises.
- Must be able to respond quickly and take rapid action including using physical restraint procedures to stabilize patient in a crisis situation.
