About the role

The Minor Procedure RN delivers and manages the care of patients undergoing surgical and endoscopic procedures for both inpatients and outpatients. Partners with the patient, family, and interdisciplinary team to promote effective and safe transitions across the health care continuum, including the Veteran's goals of care.

Responsibilities

  • Provides peers with informal constructive feedback for improvement
  • Fosters a safe and supportive environment conducive to the professional development of healthcare professionals
  • Shares educational findings, experiences, and ideas with peers
  • Questions clinical practices for the purpose of providing evidence-based care
  • Participates in activities and strategies to sustain an evidence-based practice culture
  • Identifies healthcare interventions/actions and their effect on long-range goals with patients
  • Provides competent and evidence-based care to patients receiving moderate sedation and can delegate appropriate tasks related to assisting providers with procedures
  • Safeguards patients from harm by ensuring sterility of the sterile field and the safe and efficient use of instrumentation and equipment
  • Documents care accurately in the electronic medical record
  • Manages workload
  • Maintains knowledge of supplies and equipment used in various cases
  • Seeks out opportunities to participate in quality improvement activities
  • Provides education to patients on routine procedures
  • Circulates, scrubs, monitors hemodynamics and moderate sedation, administers medications, manages specimens, and provides pre- and post-care to patients undergoing invasive procedures
  • Performs counting procedures to prevent unintended retention of surgical items
  • Affords assistance in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies, and quality improvement and outcomes utilization
  • Necessitates fundamental critical thinking abilities and may require floating to other Interventional Procedure Clinics

Requirements

  • Basic Language Proficiency
  • Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate accrediting agency
  • Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia
  • 3-5 years procedural setting experience (Operating Room, Endoscopy, Urology, Interventional Pain Clinic, Mohs Surgery)
  • 2- years reusable medical instruments and devices (sterile instruments, flexible endoscopes, ultrasound probes, etc.) and high-level disinfection (HLD)
  • 1-2 years moderate sedation administration and recovery experience
  • 2-3 years ambulatory/outpatient care experience
