Essential Duties
- Aid the Director of Nursing Services in directing the day-to-day functions of the nursing activities.
- Develop and maintain written policies and procedures for the nursing service department.
- Maintain current reference material at nurses' stations.
- Recommend written material to assist the nursing service department.
- Maintain the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Evaluate and recommend revisions to the Nursing Service Procedures Manual.
- Coordinate nursing services with other resident services.
- Evaluate nursing service personnel's compliance with job descriptions.
- Participate in the quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
- Prepare and present reports to the Director as necessary.
- Review and update resident discharge plans.
- Assist in planning the nursing services portion of the resident’s discharge plan.
- Plan and conduct regular shift meetings to address issues and improve services.
- Evaluate the department's workforce and make recommendations to the Director.
- Administer disciplinary actions fairly and without bias.
- Report occupational exposures and incidents of fraud.
- Ensure proper use and disposal of personal protective equipment.
- Monitor personnel compliance with safety regulations.
Committee Functions
- Attend various facility committees (e.g., Infection Control, Policy Advisory, Pharmaceutical, Quality Assessment).
- Prepare and present reports of nursing service programs and activities to committee meetings.
- Provide information to the Quality Assurance and Assessment Committee.
- Develop the agenda for Care Plan Committee meetings.
- Review and update discharge plans and make them available to the Care Plan Committee.
- Implement recommendations from established committees.
Nursing Care Functions
- Inform nursing service personnel of new admissions and their room assignments.
- Greet newly admitted residents and escort them to their rooms.
- Make rounds with physicians as necessary.
- Inform the Director of delayed physician visits.
- Consult with residents, families, and physicians regarding care plans.
- Notify the attending physician and next-of-kin of resident condition changes.
- Visit residents daily to assess their physical and emotional status.
- Ensure direct nursing care is provided by licensed nurses, CNAs, or NARTs.
- Review nurses' notes for accuracy and compliance.
- Provide direct nursing care as needed.
- Administer IVs, collect specimens, take vital signs, and authorize the use of restraints.
- Evaluate medication passes and treatment schedules.
- Inspect treatment areas for cleanliness and safety.
- Monitor seriously ill residents and assist the Charge Nurse.
- Inform family members of resident deaths and arrange transportation.
Staff Development
- Develop and conduct in-service training classes.
- Create annual facility in-service training programs (e.g., OSHA, TB, HIPAA, Abuse Prevention, Safety, Infection Control).
- Supervise clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees.
- Attend and participate in continuing education programs.
Safety and Sanitation
- Develop safety standards for the nursing service department.
- Evaluate and classify tasks involving potential exposure to blood/body fluids.
- Train personnel on appropriate in-service programs.
- Ensure availability and proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Monitor personnel compliance with safety regulations.
