About the role
A registered nurse (RN) provides comprehensive nursing services to inmates, including assessments, diagnoses, treatment plans, and evaluations. They collaborate with other healthcare professionals and ensure the security of the institution.
Responsibilities
- Assesses and identifies health issues for new inmates and creates medical records and special needs plans.
- Responds to daily medical needs and emergencies.
- Administers prescribed treatments and medications.
- Prepares examination areas and assists providers during patient exams.
- Maintains IVs for IV therapies as needed.
- Makes regular appointments with Health Services Administrators to review patient care.
- Serves as Charge Nurse or Acting Supervisor in the absence of the HSA, delegating tasks to staff.
- Keeps informed about emergency procedures and can take charge in crisis situations.
- Trained in CPR and capable of using AED equipment.
- Uses logical reasoning to solve problems and administer medications safely.
- Delegates tasks to lower-level licensed employees.
- Teaches patients about diet, hygiene, and disease prevention.
Requirements
- Graduate from an approved nursing program and hold a current, unrestricted RN license.
- Current CPR and BLS certification.
- Current TB test within one year.
- Complies with facility policies and maintains confidentiality of patient records.
Qualifications
- Correctional healthcare experience preferred but not required.
Skills
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Excellent deductive reasoning and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Proficiency in using computers and various software.
- Ability to use and safely operate medical equipment.
- Respect for patient dignity and confidentiality.

Schedule
Minimum 15 hours per month.

- Must complete security training and orientation.
Physical/Mental Requirements
- Ability to remain stationary and move throughout the facility, including up and down stairs.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients and convey information accurately.
- Staying calm in stressful situations.
- Frequent lifting of objects up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment
Inside a correctional facility. Employees may be exposed to inmates and must follow security protocols to prevent harm.
