Registered Nurse - Oncology/Nephrology - Day/Eve/Night

3 East is a 27-bed unit with a primary focus on renal and oncology care. An individualized orientation program with knowledgeable preceptors focuses on clinical skill development and enhancement of the professional role within the Med-Surg environment.

PRN position requiring a minimum of 24 hours off-shift per 6-week schedule. 12-hour shifts available for day, evening, or night, with weekend and holiday work as needed. Shift and weekend differential eligibility applies.

About the Role

The Registered Nurse is responsible and accountable for implementing, directing, and coordinating patient care through the nursing process: assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. This includes recognizing and treating physical and psychosocial changes unique to the age and population group served on the unit.

Responsibilities

• Demonstrate safe medication practices and maintain a professional image reflecting the role in healthcare.
• Complete chart checks to ensure no missed orders and accurately transcribe physician’s orders.
• Use therapeutic communication skills and assess patient education needs, utilizing patient education resources.
• Attend at least 50% of staff/committee meetings and in-services for the unit.
• Demonstrate leadership through the nursing process, supervision, and accountability for treatment and patient outcomes.
• Act as a resource person for patient care, specialty areas, orientation, and staff teaching.
• Respond calmly to delays, apologize for inconveniences, and provide alternatives.
• Analyze assessment data, identify priority problems, and document on the Plan of Care in PCS for patients, families, and significant others.
• Use effective problem-solving skills to plan patient care and identify critical factors indicating changes in patient condition.
• Complete and document discharge assessments against plan of care goals.
• Initiate and maintain Intravenous Therapy according to IV standards.
• Respond appropriately to emergency situations and utilize proper body mechanics to prevent injury.
• Safely position, transfer, and transport patients.
• Function as a virtual nurse, including admissions, discharges, education, documentation, and collaboration with bedside staff.
• Complete accurate problem-focused patient assessments and treatments.
• Identify abnormal clinical findings and respond appropriately.
• Evaluate patient response to medications and treatments.
• Perform peritoneal dialysis (for RNs assigned to renal, pediatrics, and oncology 3 East unit).
• Access and deaccess med ports and administer chemotherapy agents.
• Demonstrate proper procedure for discarding chemotherapy agents and cleaning up spills.
• Demonstrate appropriate technique for bladder scanner.
• Care for bariatric, postoperative orthopedic, neurological, and neurovascular patients.
• Care for patients receiving lidocaine infusion and postoperative neurological patients.
• Care for acute renal failure patients and those with PCA or epidural pumps.
• Round with physicians and demonstrate appropriate pre/post-operative patient management.
• Utilize fall prevention protocols and apply pain management techniques.
• Provide care to pediatric/adolescent patients in accordance with age-specific development, including medication exams and POC demonstrations in PCS.
• Complete the 8-hour Pediatric Emergency Assessment Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS) class.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred.
• Evidence of participation in educational programs to update and maintain current knowledge and clinical skills.
• Previous nursing experience in the specialty area preferred; pediatric experience preferred for Medical Surgical (Renal, Oncology, and Pediatrics).
• Experience applying customer service behaviors and communication skills.

Qualifications

• Eligible for or currently licensed as a Registered Professional Nurse in Pennsylvania.
• CPR certification required.
• ACLS required for Cardiovascular Services, CCU, Device Clinic, Emergency, IMCU, FBS, Tele Observation, PACU/SDS, or achieved within one year of start date.
• ACLS required for Cardiac Rehab or achieved within 3 months of hire/transfer.
• Proficiency in cardiac monitor interpretation, conscious sedation, and ACLS required for Cath Lab or achieved within 6 months of hire/transfer.
• ACLS required for Float Pool.
• PALS required for Emergency, PACU, and Pediatric trained staff within one year from start date.
• PALS and Conscious Sedation required for SDS or achieved within four months of hire/transfer.
• Certification in specialty preferred (e.g., CNOR for OR, CPAN/CAPA for PACU/SDS, CRRN for Rehabilitation Medicine, PMH-BC for BHS).
• NRP required for Level II NICU.
• NRP and Fetal Monitoring education required for Family Birthing Services within one year from start date.
• Proficiency in cardiac monitor interpretation required for PACU/SDS, IMCU, Tele Observation, CCU, Cardiac Rehab, Cardiovascular Services, Cath Lab, and Emergency.
• WOCNCB or CWCN preferred for Wound Care Center.
