About the role
Perform patient assessments and adapt interventions to meet age-appropriate care, including physical, psychosocial, and spiritual needs, in collaboration with other members of the health care team. Assist providers (MD, PA, NP) in procedures such as wound dressings, pelvic exams, laceration repairs, and other treatment options. Initiate evaluation and care of the patient prior to the physician's arrival according to standing orders.
Responsibilities
- Perform thorough and accurate documentation of patient complaints, vital signs, current medication, and allergies
- Document medications administered
- Observe and record patient behavior
- Perform physical examinations and diagnostic tests
- Collect patient health history
- Attend to the needs of patients and visitors; allay fears and answer questions as necessary
- Exhibit cooperation and positive attitude toward other clinical and medical departments
- Complete incident and error forms when appropriate
- Follow procedure for authorized medication administration and narcotic control
- Communicate questions about the appropriateness of medical care through chain of command as needed
- Perform treatments and procedures as directed, within individual's training and capabilities, including cardiac monitoring and care of patient using IV medications as directed by physician
- Assure that patients are seen in an orderly and fair manner, and that delays and waiting times are explained
- Triage acutely ill and injured patients to be seen first
- Consult with supervisors and doctors to decide on the best treatment plan for patients
- Prepare patients for examination and assist as necessary
- Arrange for follow-up care or referral
- Complete necessary forms and logs; document medications and patient care in a timely and accurate manner
- Arrange for the transfer of patients to other departments or facilities (i.e. Emergency Dept.)
- Assist the provider on duty (MD, PA, or NP) with BLS, ACLS or PALS algorithms and contact 911 to transfer patients to the Emergency Department
- Counsel and educate patients and their families on treatment plans
- Read and interpret patient information, making treatment decisions when appropriate
- Direct CMAs and CNAs as appropriate
- Research ways to improve healthcare processes and improve patient outcomes
- Perform other duties as assigned to maintain and enhance the operation of the department
