Registered Nurse- Neurology Clinic

About the role

The Clinical Nurse (CN) operates under the general supervision of the Medical Director and Neurology Nurse Manager, guided by Ambulatory Services policies and procedures, and in collaboration with physician staff. The CN performs established nursing procedures using clinical knowledge to care for patients in a case manager model of care, providing excellent clinical care, telephone advice, and patient education to Neurology patients. The CN ensures compliance with Medical Center house and Telephone Standards, and is accountable for their own practice, utilizing the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of safe patient care in the outpatient clinical setting.

The CN serves as a leader and clinical resource, demonstrating investment in the overall forward movement of the practice and organization. They provide direct nursing care, triage phone calls, complete tasks in APeX messages, reconstitute medications, and educate patients regarding illnesses, procedure preparation, and medications. The CN responds to patient questions about medication doses and side effects, informs patients about routine pathology and laboratory results, performs injections, teaches injectable medications, facilitates completion of disability forms and work letters, and assists in securing authorizations for tests and treatments.

The role requires the ability to perform and prioritize multiple tasks, work well with staff, patients, and providers, and demonstrate a high degree of independence, initiative, assertiveness, and diplomacy in a complex environment. The CN works with physician leadership to set and accomplish annual goals and collaborates with staff to develop, monitor, and maintain systems pertaining to all aspects of nursing care for the practice.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing care to patients in the clinic, including triage of phone calls and completion of requested tasks in APeX messages.
• Reconstitute medications and educate patients regarding their illnesses, procedure preparation, and medications.
• Respond to patient questions about medication doses and side effects.
• Inform patients about normal/routine pathology and laboratory results.
• Perform injections and teach patients about injectable medications.
• Facilitate completion of disability forms and work letters.
• Assist faculty and staff in securing authorizations for tests and treatments.
• Utilize the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of safe patient care.
• Serve as a clinical resource and leader for staff, initiating and participating in patient and staff education.
• Work with physician leadership to set and accomplish annual goals.
• Develop, monitor, and maintain systems pertaining to all aspects of nursing care for the practice.
• Ensure a safe environment for patients and staff.
• Demonstrate observational skills, set priorities, and function independently under shifting priorities and pressure.
• Develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with physicians, nurses, and other medical staff.
• Contribute to team building, positive morale, and effective conflict resolution.
• Remain current in professional and technical knowledge, applying it to the job and seeking opportunities for continual improvement in patient care and the work environment.

Requirements

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.
• Current American Heart Association CPR Certification.
• Two (2) or more years of recent Ambulatory RN experience in a back-office setting.
• Knowledge and ability essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to this position.
• Demonstrated evidence of basic analytic thinking necessary to care for a group of complex patients, such as oncology, with a high degree of attention to detail.
• Strong observational skills and the ability to set priorities.
• Ability to function independently and effectively with shifting priorities and considerable pressure.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to function under stress.
• Effective skills in applying hospital standards in area of service, teamwork, communication, respect for others, and time/priority management (see also Living Pride Standards).
• Ability to delegate tasks in a style that promotes leadership and teamwork, seeking assistance as needed.
• Demonstrated leadership experience supporting teamwork, professionalism, high-quality patient experience, or evidence-based clinical practice.
• Ability to develop and maintain constructive and cooperative working relationships with physicians, nurses, and other medical staff.
• Commitment to lifelong learning in the field of nursing and continual improvement in patient care and the work environment.
• The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Health locations.

Qualifications

• Preferred: Three (3) or more years of adult Ambulatory Neurology experience.
• Preferred: Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse Certification or Ambulatory Care Nursing Certificate.
• Preferred: Membership in professional organizations.
• Preferred: BSN.

Pay

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Placement within the salary range is dependent on factors including work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.
