About the Role

The Registered Nurse functions as a caregiver for a specific patient population to achieve desired outcomes. This position focuses on expanding knowledge and skills, provides effective direct care as part of the interdisciplinary team to a variety of complex patients, and directs and oversees the care provided by other caregivers through delegation, validation, evaluation, and coordination. The role effectively coordinates patient care and unit activities among nursing peers, physicians, and support services.

Responsibilities

A day in the life of a Registered Nurse includes the following key responsibilities:

  • Assessment
    • Collects comprehensive data pertinent to the patient's health or situation.
    • Performs age and disease-specific assessment/data collection independently in a systematic manner, focusing on physiologic, psychological, and cognitive status.
    • Recognizes clinical and diagnostic status changes in patient conditions.
    • Identifies variables in patient/family education needs based on age, disease, and culturally specific learning differences.
  • Planning
    • Develops a plan of care that prescribes strategies and interventions to attain expected outcomes.
    • Formulates age and disease-specific, patient/family-centered goals/outcomes based on assessment data.
    • Develops and coordinates a plan of care that is patient/family-focused, prioritized, and encompasses the continuum of care.
  • Implementation
    • Communicates, coordinates, and implements the plan of care.
    • Provides ongoing communication with patient/family, nursing colleagues, and other members of the healthcare team regarding the patient's status, rendered care, and treatment plans.
    • Implements age and disease-specific care in an organized and timely manner.
    • Provides or coordinates patient/family education as needed and ensures understanding.
    • Performs according to established protocols in clinical situations, including communicating with appropriate persons and documenting events.
    • Provides nursing care and treatments that reflect the patient's needs, advocates appropriately, and demonstrates evidence-based nursing practice and compliance with standards.
    • Performs continuous Point-of-Care electronic documentation of each patient's assessments, plan-of-care, interventions, and evaluation of rendered care.
    • Administers medication utilizing the newest advancements in bar-scanning and documentation technologies to ensure safe delivery.
    • Facilitates multi-disciplinary discharging of patients to ensure safe transitioning and continuum of care.
  • Evaluation
    • Evaluates progress toward attainment of outcomes.
    • Utilizes critical thinking skills based on nursing knowledge to achieve desired patient outcomes.
    • Initiates interventions related to patient's change in condition and unexpected response to care.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Identifying ethical issues in the practice setting and bringing them to the attention of other team members.
  • Recognizing and responding to opportunities to enhance patient satisfaction.
  • Acquiring and maintaining competencies, certifications, and continuing education to meet facility accreditation or individual licensing requirements.
  • Adhering to the American Nurses Association Code for Nurses with Interpretive Statements.
  • Lifting a minimum of 35 lbs., pushing and pulling a minimum of 10 lbs., and standing a minimum of 6 hours a day.
  • Adhering to HMH's Organizational and Managerial competencies and standards of behavior.
  • Performing other duties and/or projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • A minimum of an Associate in Nursing or diploma in Nursing degree.
  • BSN in progress and/or willing to acquire within three (3) years of hire (applies to team members hired on or after November 2019).
  • For team members hired after June 1, 2021, or under specific union contracts (CC456U, CC689U, CC891U), a BSN is required within five years of hire. Advanced master's degrees in nursing programs satisfy the BSN requirement (e.g., Associates to MSN).
  • Six (6) or more months of relevant nursing experience OR active participation in Hackensack Meridian Health's Nurse Residency Program.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing patient needs.

  • Exceptional focus on teamwork and dedication to ongoing education.
  • Passion for delivering the highest quality of care based on a strong sense of patient focus.

Preferred Qualifications

  • National Certification in area of specialty (preferred when eligible).

Licenses and Certifications

  • Current and valid Registered Nurse license to work at the assigned HMH location by date of hire.
  • BLS/CPR certification by the American Heart Association required within 60 days of hire.

Pay

Minimum starting rate of $46.25 per hour. The posted rate of pay is provided for informational purposes only and is not a guarantee of a specific offer. The base compensation may vary based on factors including labor market data, experience, education, certifications, skills, geographic location, internal equity, and budget or grant funding. Some positions may also be eligible for shift differentials for work performed on evening, night, or weekend shifts.
