About the role
The Lactation Consultant is a Registered Nurse who champions and serves as an expert consultant for the facility's Breastfeeding Program. The primary focus of this role is facilitating the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding by providing education and assistance to our patients. Additionally, this RN Specialist will train and collaborate with the maternal nursing staff in order to provide consistent and accurate information to new mothers. You collaborate with all other healthcare disciplines to achieve successful execution of the patient's plan-of-care.
Responsibilities
- Facilitate the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding by providing education and assistance to patients
- Train and collaborate with maternal nursing staff to provide consistent and accurate information to new mothers
- Function in the role of labor and delivery nurse when the lactation census is low and help with department staffing needs
- Consider developmental goals for infant, toddler, preschool, school age, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients during assessment
- Provide outpatient education and support for expectant and new parents
- Conduct classes imparting information encompassing breastfeeding according to stated objectives and content for each topic
Education
- Associate's Degree in Nursing - required
- Bachelor's Degree in Nursing - preferred
Experience
- 2 years' experience as a lactation educator in an inpatient setting - preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- Current Texas RN License or a Compact RN license from a NCLA Compact State required. New hires have 90 days from start date to obtain Texas RN License
- Current BLS certification required
- NRP – required as per St. David's HealthCare policy
- ACLS/ALS – required as per St. David's HealthCare policy
