About the role

Under general supervision, provides professional nursing care for patients adhering to national and company standards and specialty regulations. Demonstrates knowledge of physiological, psychological, and developmental differences in patient populations including late adolescence, adulthood, middle age, and the elderly. Collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to assess and manage patient and family needs.

Pay

The general pay scale for this position is $74,979–$101,199 per year. The actual hiring rate depends on prior work experience, education, job responsibilities, location, work performance, and other factors.

Sign-On Bonus

A $10,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified Registered Nurse (RN) candidates. Bonus eligibility requires meeting all onboarding requirements and maintaining employment in good standing for a minimum of 2 years. Additional terms and conditions apply.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, implement, coordinate, evaluate, and promote continuity of care consistent with established standards and practices.
  • Assess health status by interviewing patients regarding current status and medical history.
  • Collect and record nursing assessments and interventions.
  • Review and report health status assessments, physical examinations, laboratory data, radiographic data, and psychosocial assessments to providers.
  • Assess patient and family needs; provide teaching and instructional materials.
  • Provide psychosocial support to patients and families.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Prepare and administer therapies under physician direction and supervision.
  • Administer medications and blood products using correct dosage, route, time, and technique.
  • Ensure pre-authorization and appropriate consent forms are obtained prior to therapy administration.
  • Facilitate dose modification by assessing patients, labs, protocols, and consulting physicians regarding dosage adjustments, symptom management, and problems.
  • Perform venipuncture, access implanted ports, and maintain central line catheter devices.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of patient care and treatments provided.
  • Apply knowledge of reimbursement procedures and charge capture.
  • Restock supply areas as needed.
  • Follow OSHA guidelines for handling cytotoxic agents, biohazardous waste, and bloodborne pathogens.
  • Maintain disinfection protocols and equipment according to quality control standards.
  • Manage patient medication refill requests and document information in patient charts.
  • Assist physicians with exams and procedures; maintain efficient patient flow.
  • Facilitate and schedule consultations, tests, referrals, and future appointments.
  • Triage patient phone calls and document relevant information.
  • Coordinate communication between patients, families, and the interdisciplinary team.
  • Assist patients in locating community resources.
  • Collaborate with clinical research and act as a resource to LPNs, LVNs, and medical assistants.
  • Provide nursing coverage for satellite offices as needed.
  • Serve as a mentor or preceptor to less experienced nurses.
  • Participate in professional development and maintain current knowledge of oncology nursing.

Specialty-Specific Responsibilities

Transplant RN

  • Provide nursing care from initial patient contact through high-dose chemotherapy, stem cell rescue, and follow-up care.
  • Manage symptoms, toxicities, and health abnormalities related to high-dose therapy and stem cell rescue in collaboration with the transplant physician.
  • Report data to transplant registries and incorporate network recommendations into clinical practice.
  • Assist in providing community education on stem cell transplantation.

Infusion RN

  • Program portable infusion pumps for continuous drug delivery and instruct patients or caregivers on pump use at home.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of ambulatory infusion pump use, maintenance, cleaning, and documentation.

Requirements

  • Graduate from an accredited professional nursing education program; BSN preferred.
  • Active RN state license and current registration with the State Board of Nursing.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Maintain continuing education requirements.
  • 3–5 years of nursing experience, with at least one year in oncology preferred.
  • Oncology certification preferred.
  • Specialized knowledge or experience in the following areas, as applicable:
    • Bone marrow or hematopoietic stem cell transplant (Transplant RN).
    • Infusion nursing; Chemotherapy Immunotherapy provider card preferred (Infusion RN).
    • Radiation oncology (Radiation Oncology RN).
    • Gynecological oncology (Gynecological Oncology RN).

Working Conditions

  • Possible exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, medical preparations, and other conditions common to an oncology/hematology clinic environment.
  • Requires full range of body motion, including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires standing and walking for extensive periods.
  • Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 lbs.
  • Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
