About the Role

The Registered Nurse (RN) utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and skills derived from the principles of biological, physical, behavioral, social, and nursing sciences to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care. All care is provided based on the concepts inherent in the model of care for TCH, promoting an ongoing partnership between patients, families, and the healthcare team. The care is culturally based and age-specific. The RN adheres to the American Nursing Association (ANA) code of ethics and the scope of practice described in the Ohio Nurse Practice Act.

Responsibilities

  • Assessment
    • Complete holistic assessments of patient’s physical, psychosocial, spiritual, and educational needs using The Christ Hospital Professional Practice Model.
    • Identify and report pertinent abnormal data and changes in patient condition to physicians and charge RNs.
    • Utilize appropriate handoff methods to communicate patient data with healthcare team members.
    • Assess patient, family, and environment for safety risks and perform safety initiatives proactively.
  • Diagnosis and Planning
    • Establish and prioritize individualized patient problems and needs based on collected data.
    • Prepare, coordinate, and revise a multidisciplinary plan of care in collaboration with patients and families.
    • Set measurable goals for each problem and communicate the plan of care using SBAR and handoff processes.
    • Initiate discharge planning upon admission and make appropriate referrals based on anticipated length of stay.
  • Implementation
    • Provide evidence-based, quality care based on assessed needs and standards of care while adhering to hospital policies.
    • Perform and delegate nursing actions based on appropriate orders and demonstrate critical thinking.
    • Provide ongoing, individualized holistic patient and family education in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
    • Respond to emergency situations with controlled precision and implement measures to prevent contamination or disease transmission.
  • Evaluation
    • Continuously evaluate nursing practice in relation to established standards, patient outcomes, and goals.
    • Adjust or continue the plan of care based on patient and family response.
    • Maintain continuity of care through continuous evaluation during handoffs, rounding, and transfers.
  • Documentation
    • Accurately and concisely document the nursing process in the patient’s electronic medical record.
    • Document the plan of care, updates, teaching, and patient/family responses in a timely manner per hospital policy.
  • Leadership and Professional Development
    • Demonstrate leadership skills, including motivating, educating, delegating, and mentoring peers and healthcare team members.
    • Assume responsibility for professional growth and development, contributing to the development of peers and colleagues.
    • Participate in 75% of staff and council meetings, as well as unit-based performance improvement and evidence-based projects.
    • Act as a resource, educator, and preceptor for multidisciplinary team members, staff, and nursing students.
    • Maintain competency in point-of-care (POC) testing for unit-specific nursing practice.
    • Strongly encouraged to participate in the professional advancement program, obtain certification in the work area, engage in professional organizations, and contribute to research and community service activities.
  • Employee Responsibilities
    • Comply with organization and department policies, including completing required training and educational requirements.
    • Maintain a good attendance record, follow time and attendance policies, and submit required paperwork in a timely manner.

Requirements

  • Education
    • AD or Diploma nurses are hired, but all nurses hired after January 2010 must obtain a BSN within 5 years of hire.
    • RNs employed at TCH prior to January 2010 with over 20 years of experience may pursue a BSN voluntarily.
    • MSN or DNP degrees supersede the BSN requirement but are not mandatory.
  • Skills and Knowledge
    • Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide age and culturally specific patient care and education.
    • Effectively communicate with peers, maintain confidentiality, and work in a culturally diverse setting.
    • Demonstrate critical thinking, accountability, and the ability to accept and implement change.
  • Licenses and Certifications
    • Current Ohio RN licensure.
    • BLS certification required prior to patient contact.
    • ACLS required within 6 months of hire for step-down and ICU areas.
    • Certification in clinical specialty expected within five years of eligibility.
    • Membership in professional organizations is desirable.
