Responsibilities

• Develop and implement an individualized perioperative patient plan of care, including:
  • Protecting the patient from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, mechanical, and thermal sources.
  • Demonstrating safe operation of equipment and machinery, and reporting unsafe situations.
  • Advocating for patient safety and speaking up with concerns.
  • Handling specimens according to facility policy and procedures.
  • Adhering to standard precautions, including the use of personal protective equipment.
  • Complying with Universal Protocol, facility site validation, and time-out policies.
  • Communicating the patient’s current status to relevant parties throughout the continuum of care.
  • Administering medications safely and correctly using the 8 rights of medication administration.
  • Practicing and monitoring aseptic technique.
• Implement the plan of care with the following interventions:
  • Managing patient recovery from anesthesia, including moderate sedation and monitored anesthesia care.
  • Assessing patient status at intervals in accordance with facility policies and procedures.
  • Providing nursing care and appropriate monitoring per policies and procedures.
  • Performing interventions to maintain or improve the patient’s tissue perfusion, genitourinary, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, and neurological systems, as well as fluid, electrolyte, and acid-base balances.
  • Ensuring the patient is returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period.
  • Performing interventions to protect the patient from infection.
  • Preparing and maintaining endoscopy instruments and accessories in working order, troubleshooting malfunctions.
  • Assessing the knowledge level of the patient or designated support person and providing education on expected responses to the procedure, psychosocial responses, nutritional management, medication management, and pain management.
  • Involving the patient or designated support person in decisions affecting their perioperative plan of care and rehabilitation process.
  • Protecting the patient’s rights, dignity, and privacy.
  • Providing age-specific, culturally competent, and ethical care within legal standards of practice.
• Evaluate the patient’s progress toward attaining outcomes and transfer care as applicable.
• Provide an accurate, concise, and pertinent hand-off report to other teammates.
• Delegate tasks according to state Nurse Practice Act, state board of nursing requirements, state laws, and job descriptions.
• Document episodes of care accurately, timely, completely, and legibly.
• Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration with team members and other stakeholders.
• Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning patient care.
• Participate in quality review, performance improvement projects, and the performance appraisal process.
• Use problem-solving and conflict resolution skills to foster effective work relationships.
• Maintain required competencies and pursue professional growth.
• Act as a patient advocate and maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information.
• Comply with all SCA and facility policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation standards, and professional guidelines.
• Actively participate in team meetings, trainings, and daily safety huddles.
• Demonstrate fiscal responsibility.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
• Current state nursing licensure to practice in good standing.
• One year of GI, OR, and/or medical/surgical nursing experience preferred.
• Successful completion of Basic Life Support (BLS) or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) within 90 days of employment or documentation of current certification.
• Successful completion of Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) within 90 days of employment or documentation of current certification.
• Successful completion of Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) course within 90 days of employment if pediatric care is included in the facility’s scope of services.
• Specialty certification in GI Nursing is preferred.
