About the role

This Emergency Department has 10 beds and treats patients from pediatric to geriatric with conditions such as abdominal pain, falls, strokes, chest pain, and headaches. The unit is staffed 24/7 with 2 ED RNs, a Critical Care Unit Coordinator (CNA), a 3rd ED RN mid-morning, and a 4th ED RN mid-day. Critical Care Services (ED/ICU) are supported by a Charge RN 24/7, an ER MD, and an additional ER provider mid-day. All shifts are 12 hours, with every third weekend required.

We are offering a $10,000 sign-on bonus for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Manage large volumes of multiple patient, family, staff, and physician priorities within short time frames, organizing workload effectively.
  • Provide quality care and ensure patient safety, advocating for patient decisions and respecting advanced directives.
  • Complete admission assessments using past medical history, therapeutic communication, and physical assessment; utilize critical thinking.
  • Identify accurate nursing diagnoses and collaborative problems to determine appropriate interventions within accepted standards of care.
  • Assess individual needs of adult, geriatric, adolescent, and pediatric patients and develop appropriate care plans.
  • Maintain accurate, objective patient records and ensure efficiency and accuracy of orders.
  • Organize workload effectively and remain flexible to environmental changes.
  • Utilize department equipment correctly and efficiently, demonstrating knowledge of special preparations or equipment for procedures.
  • Perform nursing skills/competencies including IV access, ECG interpretation, hemodynamic monitoring, airway management, pain management, neurological assessment, fluid management, infection control, respiratory management, and sedation/analgesia assessment.
  • Communicate professionally and collaborate effectively with patients, families, co-workers, and ancillary departments to ensure patient-centered coordination of care.
  • Ensure the plan of care aligns with nursing standards and hospital policies.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities and maintain knowledge of The Joint Commission standards.
  • Collaborate with and delegate to ancillary/professional staff, ensuring adherence to scopes of practice.
  • Participate in professional growth and self-development activities.
  • Contribute to staff meetings, committees, and projects for Critical Care Services quality and development.
  • Be willing to cross-train to ICU and be scheduled there to maintain competency.

Requirements

  • Registered with the Minnesota Board of Nursing.
  • BSN preferred.
  • Equivalent of one (1) year Critical Care experience within the past five years.
  • ECG recognition/interpretation within 6 months of employment.
  • Emergency Department experience preferred.
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) or Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC) certification required within six months of employment.
  • Trauma Nursing Core Course (TNCC) or Comprehensive Advanced Life Support (CALS) certification required within 12 months of employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow and adhere to Grand Itasca Clinic and Hospital policies, vision, mission, and values.
  • Maintains reliable and consistent attendance.

If no candidates meet the above requirements, consideration will be given to those with one (1) year RN experience. Paramedic, EMT, ED Internship, or ED Capstone experience preferred.

Schedule

This is a 0.9 FTE position (72 hours per pay period) with an evening/night schedule. All shifts are 12 hours, with every third weekend required.
