Department: Emergency Room • Per Diem (PD/PRN) • 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM • Saint John Hospital - Leavenworth, Kansas

About the role

The Emergency Department RN provides rapid and skilled care to patients who arrive at the hospital seeking emergency medical attention. ER Nurses are critical in delivering emergent and urgent care on an as-needed, per diem basis.

Responsibilities

  • Assess patients upon arrival to determine the severity of their condition and prioritize care using standardized triage protocols.
  • Provide direct care for a wide range of medical conditions and injuries, including administering medications, performing wound care or splinting, monitoring vital signs, and managing pain.
  • Assist with stabilizing patients and initiating life-saving interventions, including Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and trauma care.
  • Manage high-stress, rapidly changing situations, remaining calm and decisive while caring for multiple patients during busy shifts or mass casualty events.
  • Educate patients and families about medical conditions, treatment options, and discharge instructions.

Requirements

  • Current and valid state RN License.
  • Current BLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and maintain current.
  • Current ACLS (AHA) certificate within 30 days of hire and maintain current.
  • Basic Arrhythmia Interpretation within 30 days of hire.
  • Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC) within 6 months of hire.
  • Minimum of one year experience as a staff nurse RN in an acute care hospital setting; ER setting preferred.
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN) preferred.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.

Facility-Specific Requirements

  • In Paramedic Base Station ED: MICN within 12 months of hire and maintain current.
  • EDAP certified facilities: Completion of emergency pediatric course 1 and 2 within 6 months of hire.
  • Non-OB facilities: NRP (AHA) certificate within 90 days of hire and maintain current.
