About the role

The Registered Nurse (RN) provides excellent, clinically competent patient care by utilizing the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The RN effectively interacts with patients, significant others, and other healthcare team members while maintaining standards of professional nursing. The primary focus is ensuring every patient receives quality care and services through the efficient use of resources. The RN functions within the scope and standards of nursing as defined by the American Nurses Association and the Nurse Practice Act of Virginia.

As a member of the healthcare team, the RN makes decisions and performs services in the best interest of the patient, contributing positively to the patient's experience and the success of the team by prioritizing patient and team needs above individual needs.

Responsibilities

• Completes a comprehensive nursing assessment based on admission nursing history and appropriate standard of care/protocol.
• Collects and interprets available data to make knowledgeable nursing diagnoses.
• Initiates and updates the standard of care within established time frames.
• Plans, provides, and documents individual patient/family teaching and evaluates understanding.
• Initiates and implements a discharge plan upon admission and throughout hospitalization.
• Consults and informs the Clinical Coordinator and Charge Nurse of unit activities, needs, and problems.
• Organizes and reprioritizes work based on staff needs, patient needs, available resources, and unit requirements.
• Demonstrates theoretical knowledge, critical thinking, and efficient prioritization of patient needs.
• Safely administers medication and accurately verifies orders.
• Demonstrates competence in patient care areas and actively solicits feedback from patients and visitors.
• Functions independently with most procedures/protocols and assists physicians when required.
• Recognizes limitations and seeks appropriate assistance in emergency situations.
• Documents patient care per hospital policy and provides a safe environment for patients and visitors.
• Contributes to infection reduction and adheres to infection control guidelines.
• Fosters teamwork within the assigned area and participates in quality improvement activities.
• Supervises LPNs and UAPs when assigned, reviews data collection, and modifies the plan of care as needed.
• Performs as Charge Nurse when assigned, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
• Communicates the vision, mission, and goals of Chesapeake Regional Medical Center effectively.
• Fosters a healthy, collaborative, and open work environment conducive to teamwork and communication.
• Demonstrates effective problem-solving, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills.
• Maintains positive employee relations, morale, and emphasizes a team approach to work.
• Motivates and mentors staff to strive for excellence and rewards cooperation and teamwork.

• Serves as a role model, mentor, and preceptor for students and new hires.

• Attends required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services.
• Demonstrates commitment to flexible work scheduling to ensure patient care.

Requirements

• Must be a Registered Nurse licensed in the State of Virginia or a compact state.
• Must obtain BLS certification within 90 days of hire.

Qualifications

• Preferred: BSN degree.
• Preferred: Minimum of 1 year of experience in a specialty setting.

Schedule

• 12-hour shifts for inpatient staff; specialty units may differ as per unit/departmental need.
